US: February Inflation Data Could Be Key to Future Path of Interest Rates
Twin readings on inflation this week will help explain why the Federal Reserve is in no hurry to lower interest rates and also offer some insight into how long the wait might be until the central bank decides to make its first move. On Tuesday, the consumer price index for February will be released, expected to show inflation rose by 0.4% last month, a faster pace than January’s 0.3% increase. Blame an uptick in the price of gasoline for the increase that will see inflation rising at a 3.1% annual rate, unchanged from the prior month.
