Westpac Consumer Confidence: Off the canvas, but still dazed
The Westpac McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Index rose 8.9 points in the September quarter to a level of 87.6. That’s up from the record lows we saw back in June, with confidence likely to have been boosted by the firming in economic conditions and easing of health restrictions since the Omicron wave peaked. Nevertheless, confidence is still languishing at very low levels. In fact, consumer confidence is sitting around the sorts of lows that we saw during the recession in the early-1990s and during the 2008/09 Global Financial Crisis.
