A David Hockney painting of a man in a pink jacket overlooking a sun-dappled swimming pool sold for $90.3 million at Christie’s in New York on Thursday—setting a record for a living artist at auction. The 1972 work, “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures),” bested the $58.4 million record set five years ago by Jeff Koons’s balloon-animal sculpture, “Balloon Dog (Orange).” Bidding for the work, which was being sold by billionaire Joe Lewis, started at $18 million but ratcheted quickly.
