In the week ending May 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 234,000, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 222,000 to 223,000. The 4-week moving average was 219,750, an increase of 6,250 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 213,250 to 213,500. Claims taking procedures in Puerto Rico and in the Virgin Islands have still not returned to normal. New applications for U.S. unemployment benefits increased more than expected last week, but remained below a level consistent with a healthy labor market. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 234,000 for the week ended May 19, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Claims data for the prior week were revised to show 1,000 more applications received than previously reported. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims slipping to 220,000 in the latest week.
