So much for the 'world's most secure' coin: 'Minting errors' cause new £1 coins to melt, crack and the middle to DROP out
The new £1 coins are supposed to be the 'the most secure in the world' but minting errors have produced several with bizarre deformities. Bemused collectors have found coins with melted centres, cracks and even gaping holes where the silver middle should be. The mangled coins found across Britain are being sold on eBay for up to £1,000 as collectors' items. Some coins are even missing the holographic image that is supposed to make them impossible to forge. Coin collector John Taylor, from Crystal Palace, South London found a coin with no middle.
