I realize that the psychology of trading can be an uninteresting topic. As an experienced institutional fund manager, i tell you that making money in this market has far less to do with the method that you use, relative to the psychological prowess one must maintain.
You will learn more from an experienced traders psychological experiences than from their technical studies, because sharing psychological experiences can enlighten you on your own personal psychological profile, which is more valuable, in the long run.

Chris, I agree that ill-discipline will deplete an account more quickly than an unprofitable strategy/approach/method (and can therefore mask the latter), but - respectfully - I think you're putting the cart before the horse.
Without a profitable method, it's ultimately going to be impossible to maintain any kind of discipline. And even if one did, one will eventually lose anyway.
If psychology was the main barrier, then more EAs would be profitable. The high failure rate of EAs tells us that having a methodological edge is an essential prerequisite.

Hi Hanover
Thanks for the valuable input. Yes, I was expressing an extremist view to make a point. A successful trader will go through a process experimenting with various approaches to the market while refining not only the method that suits their personality, but also ones unique psychological profile. An astute developing trader will be conscious of the fact that both skill sets will develop concurrently. The more clear one becomes in their approach, the more refined ones level of consciousness of their unique psychological profile and the more consistent one becomes as a trader.

You have to read this book!
I can not describe how good this book is. I'm only half way through it but man, it is absolutely BRILLIANT.
It's a Must read for sure!!!!!!!!!
edit: This is probably the best thing I've ever read about trading!
It all is hitting home...I've gone through so much of what is said and I'm still trying to get my feet but it is making more sense now on what I have to work on.
Thank you for writing this book!!

Hi Altrader, Thanks for the note. Wiley has approached me to do a book, which should be done end of 2010.
I'm doing a webinar with Ashraf Laidi Oct 3. His intermarket analysis is the best in the fx business.

Hi Hemantaims, I will be joined by Ashraf Laidi. Although my site is not commercial, to remain respectful to FF compliance, you will have to go through my profile.

HI JWM
Yes I have been doing more live presentations on Psychology and Risk. Some of the major points will be more deeply covered in a book i'm writing for Wiley.

Excellent book!
I have learned more from short books about trading psychology than much longer books about techniques/strategies/systems. Of course both are essential, without the proper mental training, you won't be able to apply a winning technique.
