The main media narrative surrounding the G20 focussed on the rather disappointing Trump–Xi summit. There was also the Trump–Kim impromptu meeting at the demilitarized zone, the confidence exuded by Russian President Vladimir Putin and continuing trade tensions. Shiro Armstrong summed up this core narrative well: ‘The Osaka G20 summit may yet be remembered in history as the moment the global rules based order was lost’. But a second narrative is emerging.
