US-Japan trade talks hit pothole on auto duties: Trump's threat to raise tariffs 25% looms over the negotiations

The U.S. and Japan got off to a rocky start in working-level trade talks on Tuesday as Washington pushes back against Tokyo's call to eliminate tariffs on cars and auto parts. Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish led talks on the American side, meeting with Kazuyoshi Umemoto, Japan's chief negotiator for the Trans Pacific-Partnership, and policy coordinator Kazuhisa Shibuya. After the meeting, Shibuya told reporters that Gerrish said the two sides were "still far apart."
