Everything seems to be falling apart for poor old George Osborne. First, slowing growth meant that his spending plans needed a serious rework. The £27bn of wiggle room found last November has vanished, and by the time of his Budget, last week, he had £56bn less to play with. Then the Chancellor faced a rebellion from one of his own colleagues. Iain Duncan Smith, the former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, resigned over cuts to benefits for the disabled.
