U.K. First-Quarter Jobless Rate Falls to Five-Year Low of 6.8%

Britain’s unemployment rate fell to a five-year low in the first quarter, intensifying the debate over when the Bank of England should begin raising interest rates. The jobless rate measured by International Labour Organization methods dropped to 6.8 percent from 6.9 percent in the three months through February, the Office for National Statistics said in London today. The figure was in line with the median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey. Today’s figures also showed wage growth outstripping inflation for the first time since 2010.
