Ugly-looking jobs report is beautiful on the inside

So, the U.S. economy created fewer jobs than expected in January, and even worse, December’s dismal reading was barely revised. Some analysts were blaming the weather, but it’s worth pointing out the week in which the Labor Department actually polled companies, it was warmer than normal, according to Goldman Sachs analysts. And goods-producing sectors, including the notoriously weather-impacted construction industry, actually had a good month and added more jobs than the services side of the economy. One surprise was the 29,000 drop in government payrolls, in part due to a 9,000 drop at the U.S. Postal Service. (full story)
