Canada Preview: July Hiring Expected to Underperform

Canadian employers are expected to have hired only 5,000 new employees in July, when Statistics Canada releases the Labour Force Survey Friday. The unemployment rate is expected to edge back up to 7.3% after dropping to 7.2% in June. The addition of 5,000 jobs for July is the median estimate in a survey of analysts by MNI, in which projections ranged from -10,000 to 15,000 new positions. The past two months have each reported jobs gains close to 7,000 positions, following large gains in March and April.
