For all Italy's attractions, there's good reason for concerns

Some other aspects of the Italian economy, though, don't look too bad. Unemployment is about 8pc, below the eurozone average of 10pc. In Spain the rate is 21pc, in Ireland 14pc, in Greece 15pc and in Portugal over 12pc. And in marked contrast to Spain, Italy did not undergo a massive property boom. Partly because of this, her banks look relatively sound. Mind you, quite how they would stand up to a sovereign debt default elsewhere in the eurozone, or to a sharp rise in Italian government bond yields, is another matter.
