The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.1 percent in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, after increasing 0.4 percent in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 4.0 percent before seasonal adjustment. The index for shelter was the largest contributor to the monthly all items increase, followed by an increase in the index for used cars and trucks. Inflation rose at a 4% annual rate in May, the lowest in 2 years

The inflation rate cooled in May to its lowest annual rate in about two years, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. The consumer price index, which measures changes in a multitude of goods and services, increased just 0.1% for the month, bringing the annual level down to 4%. That 12-month increase was the smallest since March 2021, when inflation was just beginning to rise to what would become the highest in 41 years.
