DislikedIf it would be Europe, I would recommend my country - Bulgaria for a few simple reasons:
1/ Pro-American government - easy to get Vissa
2/ Member of the EU already
3/ Large English-speaking comunities
4/ nice climate, variety of places to relax - both mountine and sea resorts
5/ tax paradise - forex or any other financial instrument income is zero-rate charged
As to crime... well, compared to the US Europe is a totally different situation.
There are disadvantages ofcourse... will tell you some other time in case someone's realy interested...Ignored
Disliked@FXSurfer - I live in Varna - it's on the sea coast - nice city, about 1 million, lots of places to live the life of sin
The picture you've posted is from a small historic town - there are lots of those around - a few thousand years old, founded by Greeks once upon a time. As a matter of fact I grew up in one of those, it's called Balchik - still in love with that place.
As to the rest of the details - the price of living is fair, and the internet connection is probably one of the cheapest in Europe - you can get 5 megabits for 10EUR per month,...Ignored
DislikedThough I am a bit biased towards Australia, have you considered Perth?
It is a bit of an isolated city if you want to travel locally, but it is great for families, offers great time zone for trading London and Europe session, fantastic private schools, good beaches etc.
Cheers,

DislikedAlso, unless you rent a house already set up with DSL, you'll have to wait months now to get a connection in Thailand.Ignored
DislikedA major issus is getting a visa for you and your family. It's not easy in most places. In Thailand if you're over 50 and have 25k in the bank, you can get a residency visa. Other than that it's not easy. Many expats just make visa runs to Canbodia, but they've clamped down on that in the last few years to the extent that after a certain number of visa renewals you'll have to leave the country for a certain amount of time, which I believe is 6 months. That's a pain in the ass.Ignored

DislikedThere seems to be a fair bit of disinformation about Thailand on this thread.
Being married and living in Bangkok are not mutually exclusive states. The vast majority of decent Thai people wouldn't go anywhere near the seedy nightlife areas - if you do then that's your choice, the same as it is in any other country. I think the fact that a lot of other people seem to focus on this aspect says more about what they get up to on their holidays than it does about Thailand.
I got a new line and connection up and running in 5 days the last time...Ignored
DislikedI like to take things as they are, and I just can't identify with the foreigners here who spend so much time complaining about everything.Ignored
DislikedIsn't that crazy? Having lived abroad a lot myself, it never ceased to amaze me how much time people spent bitching about the weather, food, differences in culture etc. ...often while pretty much being in paradise.Ignored
DislikedI knooooww - take Seattle, for instance, rains like 400 days a year and just try getting a parking space when you go to see the Space Needle....Ignored
DislikedHi Pete, I agree with you about Phuket being expensive.
I'm not all that keen on living in a Western ghetto by the way, so I tend to keep to myself a lot of the time. In fact I can honestly say that the most disappointing thing about Thailand for me, has been the quality of foreigners living here. I have made only 2 or 3 real Western friends in 6 years of living here. I like to take things as they are, and I just can't identify with the foreigners here who spend so much time complaining about everything.
