Drawing inspiration from the successful outcomes of the Notable Numbers strategy, I have decided to develop another blueprint/analysis that explores the potential of seemingly "primitive" trading strategies.
Strategy Overview:
In upcoming posts, I will analyze multiple symbols to determine the optimal trading conditions for each. Ultimately, I aim to create a portfolio of tradable setups based on this strategy. While this approach can be manually executed, I intend to utilize an Expert Advisor (EA) to analyze data and conduct forward tests, ensuring the viability of this strategy.
However, it is important to note that this strategy can also be traded manually without considering round hours for exits. By setting fixed stop loss (SL) and take profit (TP) levels, you can still implement the strategy effectively. The round hour component for exits is optional and can be disregarded if desired.
Strategy Overview:
- Timeframe: Daily
- Indicator: Simple Moving Average based on "Median Price"
- Strategy type: Retrace or Breakout
When the price surpasses the Simple Moving Average (SMA), we are presented with two alternatives: anticipate a continuation of the current trend or expect a reversal.
Entry Setup 1:
- The current day's open price is lower than the Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the median price
- The price crossed the SMA from below
- Previous X day's high/low prices are below SMA (this is an optional condition to determine how strong was a previous trend)
- Enter SELL for reversal
- Enter BUY for breakout
Entry Setup 2:
- The current day's open price is higher than the SMA of the median price
- Price crossed the SMA from above
- Previous X day's high/low prices are above SMA (this is an optional condition to determine how strong was previous trend)
- Enter BUY for reversal
- Enter SELL for breakout
Entry Timing:
- The timing for entering trades will vary for different symbols, based on specific time spans (hours and days). However, trades will only be initiated at round hour intervals.
Exit Strategy:
- Fixed "soft" stop loss (SL) and take profit (TP) targets will be established for each symbol as percentages.
- Exit timing can also vary based on round hour intervals. An additional floating safety stop loss of 30 pips will be utilized.
- Here's how it works: If the calculated SL is, for example, 60 pips, a hard SL will be set at 90 pips from the entry point. The price will be monitored at round hour intervals (e.g., 16:00, 17:00, etc.). If the price surpasses the soft SL of 60 pips, the position will be closed.
Reasoning for this Approach:
- The absence of a fixed TP allows for potential gains as prices may continue to rise significantly within a one-hour timeframe.
- By incorporating breaks on the stop loss side and letting the price run for one hour on the take profit side, we aim to capture extended price movements.
Here example of what can be TP for this approach - soft SL is 0.2% and TP 0.3% (monitored at round hours):
