The Japanese government intends to buy the Diaoyu Islands from private citizen Kunioki Kurihara. But how the the Kurihara family came became the purported "owners" of the islands?
The Diaoyu Islands have been China’s inherent territory since ancient times. However, the government of the Qing Dynasty ceded Taiwan and its affiliated islands to Japan in 1895, after its defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War.
In the same year, Japan’s Meiji Government illegally put the Diaoyu Islands under its administration, saying the Qing government did not have actual control over them.
Later, it illegally lent the Diaoyu Islands to entrepreneur Koga Tatsushirō. Then, in 1932, the Japanese government sold three of the main islands of the group to Tatsushirō family.
As the Tatsushirō family declined, it sold the Nan Xiaodao and Bei Xiaodao to businessman Kunioki Kurihara from Saitama Prefecture in 1972, and again sold Diaoyu Island to him in 1978. Since then, the Kurihara family has become the purported private owner of the islands.
Kunioki Kurihara has only landed on the island once. There is nothing on the islands, except several collapsed shabby houses and a lighthouse built by Japanese rightists.
