Further to my previous post .... there is something weird going on with my desktop hardware. Either Mint doesn't like running with an Octacore processor or the Nvidia display hardware is not happy.
The failure mode is different after I moved from the generic driver to the (recommended) Nvidia driver. So fingers are pointing again, unfotunately I have to go in with a different fix approach because this time the system cannot get GRUB even halfway off the ground. However, the system will still boot to Windows and that part of the process involves at least a part of the dual-boot GRUB software.
