It's no measure of "total volume" of course because that cannot be known (at least at our retail level) but when the activity is spread evenly across the bars, patterns of which greater "volume" (buy or sell) can be seen. And that's why your tick charts can be valuable. "Tick Charts" are based upon this "activity" so you have "approximate volume" applied right to the price action. No "activity", then no price movement on a tick chart.
