Generation Gap Trading
I've been thinking about Generation Gaps lately, and I naturally drifted to the application of generational demographics to trading. I recalled reading this article/blog post a couple months back about a member of Generation X learning his first lesson of trading -- the hard way. Here's the link if you're interested: http://genxfinance.com/2008/02/21/i-blew-5000-in-learning-how-not-to-invest/ That entire site is devoted to finance and investing information from a Gen X point of view. Kinda like if Curt Kobain had later become a fund manager. So I was interested to ask the question: What generations are forex traders from? Does it affect their trading style? Does the forex appeal more to later generations than the aged? As a baseline, there are basically 4 generations of adults (This is applied usually to US citizens, but does have some international application): Pre WWII: People born before the last major war, before Americans drove German and Japanese cars, (and found them more reliable). Today, we call them "Senior Citizens," and "Floridians." The depression made these people very frugal, and may consider investing and gambling synomous. FDR was president for most of the birth years of the pre-WWII generation. Mercifully, we have a two-term limit now. Baby Boomers 1945 - 1964: This is the famous generation from the 60s who wanted free love, cheap drugs, and rallied against "The man." Now, they are "The Man," and are fighting hard to keep their kids away from free love and drugs. Their music is now a backdrop for automobile commercials and fiber supplement ads. Some of this generation became uber-rich in the 80s as a result of a booming investment market. Generation X 1965 - 1979: This angst-loving group, also known as "The Breakfast Club" generation made the Sex Pistols famous and made the Mullet legendary. Today, these guys and gals are reaching their 30s, or *gasp* 40s. They now find themselves leaders in business and community, and supporting a rapidly growing tattoo-removal industry. These guys, as the article above indicated, are just barely figuring out the trading and finance world. They have figured out spending though! The Baby Boomers and older elected an actor President. Will Gen X and Y elect Ashton Kutcher? Generation Y (Millenials) 1980 - 2001: This group is just barely giving up its acne pads, and is beginning to enter productive society in full force. They are learning to use their text-messaging fingers for something useful, and they demand information be instantaneous. Trading for them is in many ways still on the horizon, but this group has more money-making potential at a young age than any before it. Those that are willing, please share what generation you are from, and tell us if it has an affect on your trading habits, risk tolerances, or whether it affects your willingness or ability to invest at all. Pseudo-political entertainer John Stewart is a popular voice for cynical Gen X and Y members. Quite a contrast to the Boomer's Mike Wallace. On a more serious note, both the USD/JPY and US equities markets are at important resistance points this week.
