Magnitude 6.4 earthquake hits southern Taiwan: USGS

A powerful earthquake struck southern Taiwan early on Saturday near the city of Tainan, triggering at least one partial building collapse and other damages but no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.4 quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.7, was centered 27 miles (43 km) southeast of Tainan, a city of nearly 2 million people. The quake was very shallow, at depth of 6.2 miles (10 km), which would have amplified its effects, the USGS said. Taiwan's China Post newspaper said on its website that more than one building collapsed in the quake. ... (full story)
