The number of job openings was little changed at 5.4 million on the last business day of May, the highest since the series began in December 2000, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The number of hires was unchanged at 5.0 million in May and the number of separations was little changed at 4.7 million. Within separations, the quits rate was unchanged at 1.9 percent and the layoffs and discharges rate was little changed at 1.2 percent.
