Magnitude 7.9 Quake Strikes Sea Southeast of Tokyo; No Tsunami

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 struck deep below ground about 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) southeast of Tokyo, causing tremors in Japan’s capital. No tsunami warning was issued. The earthquake, which was centered off Japan’s Ogasawara islands, struck at 8:24 p.m. local time at a depth of 590 kilometers, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, which gave a preliminary magnitude reading of 8.5. There were no immediate reports of damage from the earthquake, according to Japan’s national broadcaster NHK.
