Be like the French? No way, says U.K. Treasury chief George Osborne

British Treasury chief George Osborne might want to skip France for his vacation this summer. In his 2015 budget statement, delivered on Wednesday, the U.K.’s Chancellor of the Exchequer managed to squeeze in several barbs against the French, mocking the country’s economy and reviving memories of a historic Gallic military defeat at the hands of Les Anglais. The first dig came when Osborne noted the U.K. economy grew 2.6% last year—the best rate in all the major advanced economies. “That is 50% faster than Germany, three times faster than the eurozone—and seven times faster than France,” Osborne said.
