Japan Leading Index Falls Unexpectedly In January

The leading index for Japan, which measures the future economic activity dropped unexpectedly in January, after rising in the previous month, preliminary figures from the Cabinet Office showed Friday. The leading index fell slightly to 105.1 in January from 105.3 in December. Economists had expected the index to rise to 105.8. Meanwhile, the coincident index that reflects the current economic activity climbed to 113.0 in January from 110.6 in the prior month. It was the highest score since March 2014, when it marked 114.6.
