The Doctor Who Will See You Now in Germany Is From Serbia
At Ivana Stankovic’s anesthesiology ward in the German countryside an hour and a half west of Frankfurt, there’s not a single native German among the youngest rank of doctors. The 29-year-old resident works alongside other assistant doctors from India, Hungary, Egypt, Ukraine and Slovakia. They’re all part of a wave of young doctors from eastern and southern Europe that are pouring into Germany. Last year brought the third double-digit percentage increase in a row, as the number of foreign doctors practicing in Germany surged 120 percent in the past decade to more than 31,000.
