Pressure Builds for New Zealand Central Bank to Raise Rates
A surging economy is prompting some economists to reconsider when New Zealand’s central bank may need to start raising interest rates. Most economists think the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will raise the Official Cash Rate (OCR) next March – which would make it one of the first developed-world central banks to raise rates since the global financial crisis – but a Wall Street Journal poll of 10 economists pointed to a 15% chance that rates could be hiked even earlier, with one economist placing the odds at 40%.
