Panicked Italian savers smuggling cash from country results in £30million seized
Italian customs officials have seized more than £30million from worried savers trying to smuggle gold and banknotes out of the country because of the euro crisis. The smugglers are resorting to ever more inventive ways to avoid paying duty on their cash. One woman sewed £85,000 in banknotes into her underwear – both used and clean – while a businessman hid£110,000 in his hollowed-out luggage. Another man painstakingly inserted£180,000 worth of €500 notes into individual cigarettes.
