Modi-Led Opposition Poised for India Majority as Votes Counted
Narendra Modi’s opposition bloc was leading in enough seats to win a parliamentary majority in India’s election, pushing the rupee close to a 10-month high as stocks gained the most in five years. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies lead in 281 of 500 seats where results are available, more than the 272 needed for a majority. The Congress-led bloc is leading in 80 seats, with other parties ahead in 139 seats, according to NDTV. “Modi’s carefully crafted message that he can deliver has really resonated with voters,” said Pradeep Taneja, who lectures on Asian politics at the University of Melbourne. ...
