Yen Surges 2% in Minutes With Traders Edgy on Intervention Risk

The yen advanced more than 2% against the dollar late in the New York session, fueling speculation that the Japanese authorities could be intervening to support the currency. The yen sharply strengthened from a level of around 157.58 per dollar to around 153.91 per dollar as of 4:40 p.m. in New York. The move came even as the greenback pared losses against other Group-of-10 currencies. “From the price action, it’s similar to an intervention move,” said Yusuke Miyairi, a currency strategist at Nomura International Plc.
