The European Union's lead Brexit negotiator wants British and EU officials to work in French rather than English during the divorce talks, an EU official familiar with Brussels' Brexit task force said on Friday. Michel Barnier, the former French foreign minister running the complex separation with London, is keen that his native tongue be used in meetings and documents, the source told Reuters during a EU summit at which Theresa May was making her first appearance as prime minister at the European Council. What is your definition of "Hate". I do not believe you're hated in France, Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. It's just a mindset some may have cultivated. Maybe British should bury/pocket their domineering attitude. If you feel hated that could be the reason.People of the continents you listed and any other humans hate domineering behaviour. That could possibly be the reason the negotiator wants the negotiation be done in French. If I were the negatiator, I would stick with that condition. No French, no negatiation. I so much admire him. The British domineering attitude made them to create Common Wealth Organisation- countries of their former colony. This's where they can use their peanut foreign aid to attract members. This is why I so much love the US for refusal to join the CWO. Negotioation should be done with French.

If I say Im English I get the cold shoulder (sorry cant speak English) but as soon as I say Im from New Zealand (ahh that it different) I get all the help in the world. Im not the only one that experiences this. I have been told it had something to do with the war?

Generally the more populated the area (cities) the ruder and blunter people tend to be, but that's not to be taken personally, because they are like that to everyone. And that is city life the world over. In rural areas, people have far more time and love to chat to you. Also, it is a nuance in their language that they don't use niceties like we do in English; they are more direct and to some that could appear rude.

What I would suggest is that you try this out in France. Try not to sound too English. Then ask a question in English, wait for a response , then say you are from New Zealand(Kiwi) then watch the difference in attitude. This not just my experience but many people you talk to. It would be interesting to see what happens.

We go to France three times a year, OK if you speak English without attempting to speak French you'll get the cold shoulder. If you try they are some of the most kind hearted, friendly people that we have met, most of them can speak English but like the English are with language they are shy using it. I can pretty much understand most of what they say in conversation now so I can speak phrases that they can understand but they know I'm English. They will be charming and speak to you in English. The only hatred of the English is in the minds of their politicians, it goes all the way back to Napoleon when they blockaded our ports.

From what I've seen, you will get your chance soon. The French are far more proud and nationalistic than we are and hate the EU more than us too. That bodes very well. There are a lot more French flags being flown now; it's a great thing to see. I love France and don't want to see it get sucked down the EU toilet.

I'm not quite fluent in French but I like to give it my best. I experience nothing but patience and encouragement.

I know the French don't hate the English; rather they hate English louts who don't make any effort and speak loudly and slowly to them, in English, as though they are retarded. Perhaps a fine example could be our friend cliffedwards as he himself has admitted above.

I like to speak French in France. It seems rather a rude thing to do to assume that someone would or could converse with you in English. Is your experience only with the French or do you have it with other nationalities too? Maybe Kiwis command more intrigue than simply being English; after all they see us all the time as we are just next door.

I can't see any issue here at all. Its standard practice to have translators. In 2008 New Zealand settled the very first free trade deal with China. It was not about language but about Win-Win diplomacy. Vive la difference! The Chinese are also extremely friendly people by the way.

Well said. The French are different to us in the sense that they expect you, when in France, to respect the French ways, their laws and customs. Secularism, for example, has been a highlight recently. Too right, and for that I have immense respect for them. They are not wishy washy liberals like us, letting the world's undesirables dictate to us how to live our lives.
