Sterling tumbles as poll puts Yes campaign within 'touching distance of victory'
Growing support for Scottish independence hit the pound on Tuesday, as a new poll put the Yes campaign within "touching distance of victory". Sterling fell by almost a cent against the dollar to $1.6521 on Tuesday morning after a YouGov poll showed support for a Scottish exit jumped by eight points in the last month to 47pc, compared with 53pc who said they planned to vote no. The results of the poll also triggered the biggest rise in sterling volatility in three years, as traders rushed to insure their positions against the risk of a Scottish secession.
