EUROZONE VIEW: Albert Edwards of Societe General Cross Asset Research
says given that the bulk of the trade is done with other eurozone
countries, the "root problem" for the peripherals is "a lack of
competitiveness within the eurozone - an inevitable consequence of the
'one size fits all' interest rate policy." Even if fiscal deficits are
slashed (as Ireland is attempting), to "maintain credibility" in the
near-term, the lack of competitiveness will need years of relative
deflation, a situation not likely to be tolerated by the electorates,
Edwards says. "Unlike Japan or the US, Europe has an unfortunate
tendency towards civil unrest when subjected to extreme economic pain,"
he says. The political will to remain in the eurozone may falter under
these conditions. Edwards maintains that "any 'help' given to Greece
merely delays the inevitable break-up of the eurozone."
