USD/JPY still open with + 62 pips so far. Also put on a 15 pip TS here. I guess this is best way to exit if gains become bigger than 20 pips ...

doesn't look good with low volatility periods, try august 2004 as an example, the daily range that time was 60-70 pips instead of 200-250 pips now

Seems to me we should all beware of any trading during low volatility times.

Only a few methods devoted to small range trading are appropriate and unfortunately they miss the big moves.

If only we could predict which market we will get for the next 30 minutes or so with 1m chart trading....

Today we had some low volatility identified by small price swings; and it was not a good time to trade. Just my thoughts,

Steve

I've been using an ATR cross lately and it seems to be working well enough. If the short term atr is greater than the long term atr we're in a higher relative volatility period.

BUT even before the markets crashed, the usd/gbp was always a large range pair. I can clearly remember even in April this year, the pair moved a lot of days between 150-250 pips. Lets see when volatility go down a bit, but I'm betting that this system will still work...scalping is just that, scalping - whether it is 1 pip or 100 pips.

Regardless, going with volatility trading...suites my purse :-)

Even though mt4 volume is not claimed to be representative of the entire interbank market, I was taught to use a 10 period sma of it for the standard indicator of volume that comes with MT4. See chart below...

The yellow line is a 10sma applied to the volume indicator which is dragged from the navigator view onto the volume indicator. You can make the volume the color of your background and just use the yellow 10sma line.

I don't really look at it much but it is a respectable substiture for a subscription service volume you get with esignal and other paid services.

Green is short term
Red is long term

If green is over red, more volatile, otherwise, less volatile.
