I'm surprisingly still here with a free margin of $37 and an open loss of $543.

Good question. Interestingly, I did learn a lot and I'll do a summary later today. Down to a $1.62 free margin at the moment.

I've never faced a margin call before? How does that work? I thought when it goes negative I'm out? FXDD anyone?

why oh why,

It looks like you have an oanda order summary. In oanda the max leverage you can use is 50:1 but the actual margin call doesn't close your positions till 100:1 leverage is exhausted. So if you have a 100 dollar account you can open about 5000 units depending on price. Your actual margin call however won't close your positions till you would be at -50 dollars margin i think.

I've never faced a margin call either, so I'm not really sure what's happens.

I'm actually on FXDD. Perhaps it's the same there? I just don't understand why they bother with that indicator then. If I've got negative free margin I thought the positons would just be closed when I go in to negative free margin. Silly me. Anyone else blown up an FXDD account?

i didn't mean to come across that i haven't had margin calls...yes plural. but i know oanda's margin call is different than the other higher leverage bucket shops. Some may say oanda is a bucket shop aslo but that isn't the debate here.

And no, I haven't used that broker. Ive used others and now use oanda. the other brokers closed at zero margin so i'm not sure about fxdd.

Surely someone else still here - all of the above plus another couple - can shed some light on this?

"I went in to this with my eyes open. As I said in the first post which was confirmed by many others I always knew the account would blow up. It was just a question of when.

Everbody here reinforces daily the need for stop losses. My thread is an example of why. I risked the account to gain 30 pips because I wanted to get to the longest unbroken string of profitable trades. The primary goal was that. Account balance - which grew to $973.76 from $500 since 21st December 2006 - was a secondary concern. And risk management was limited to the balance of the account at any one time.

Would anybody else do what I did? What is the longest unbroken chain of profitable trades? Anybody know? Does it matter? Well surely I can't be the only one who's interested.

So I did have a stop loss of a sort - a margin call! That was my risk management. Stupid - maybe. Reckless - perhaps. But how many others have blown up accounts. Everyone here I imagine - at least I'm in good company then."

The obituary above was being written because I thought I could not recover from negative free margin. Well, I have and nobody knows why. I started it when we got to 2888 - we're now back at 2900. I'll finish it later - when I have a margin call. God knows when!

Trading is a business, you gotta come up with a business plan (trading strategy) and stick to it. You can't go into trading accepting to go bankcrupt. YOu have to do everything you can to preserve your capital.

hilmy83 nice to see you.

I've been trading long term positions since well before the Refco debacle. As I said in the early posts I'm a slow learner. I just have no interest in day trading other than this thread and the account you've seen. But hats off to the 2% of sucessful traders who do day trade. IMO the other 3% are made up of long term fundamental traders blending technical analysis.

I've currently doubled the account balance and I'm treating this as fun. And from my post volume here you can see I'm quite enjoying it. And you're right it'll prove nothing. But I never wanted to be the fastest runner, best swimmer, etc. What's the point of records? None. But, Sir, I'm doing this for me - not you. But who's had the longest run of consecutive profitable trades? Does it matter how you get there if that is your primary objective?

I'll never get anywhere near to a 1000 winning trades. But I've currently had 45 successful closed trades and nearly doubled this account. In February I'll up the lots so that if I get it right I can double it again. I wouldn't do that every month but if my bullish EURUSD view is right then it could be exceptionally profitable. But I doubt if I will get much further. We'll see. Have a great day hilmy83.

Pivot point stands at 282. As long as 282 is not broken down, I favour an upmove with 313 and then 33 as next targets. The daily technical indicators are bearish but are close to supports. Anyone agree? It's a big move!
