USA-CANADA tariffs go into effect on April 2. Large fluctuations in the USD are possible.

Key Findings

  1. President Trump has threatened and imposed a variety of new tariffs for his second term in office, from universal baseline tariffs to country-specific tariffs.
  2. We estimate that the IEEPA and Section 232 tariffs will reduce US GDP by 0.4 percent and hours worked by 309,000 full-time equivalent jobs, before accounting for foreign retaliation.
  3. China, Canada, and the European Union have announced or imposed retaliatory tariffs.
  4. The first Trump administration imposed tariffs on thousands of products valued at approximately $380 billion in 2018 and 2019. The second Trump administration tariffs now affect more than $1 trillion of imports, and when temporary exemptions for Canada and Mexico expire in April, the tariffs will affect more than $1.4 trillion of imports.
  5. The Biden administration kept most of the Trump administration tariffs in place, and in May 2024, announced tariff hikes on an additional $18 billion of Chinese goods, including semiconductors and electric vehicles.
  6. We estimate the 2018-2019 trade war tariffs imposed by Trump and retained by Biden reduce long-run GDP by 0.2 percent, the capital stock by 0.1 percent, and employment by 142,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
  7. Academic and governmental studies find the Trump-Biden tariffs have raised prices and reduced output and employment, producing a net negative impact on the US economy.

Trump came

He removed all illegal immigrants ( cheap labour ) : production cost went up

He imposed tariff : there was a counter measure and USA stopped getting raw materials for his industries. , people stop sending tourist tourism slowed, local business slowed. : inflation went up

Consumer confidence declined

Gold is looking quite stretched, and a cooling-off period seems overdue. Technically, we might see a pullback, but fundamentally, several factors could weaken the metal. If geopolitical risks fade, like Trump’s pledge to resolve conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, we could see a dip in haven demand. Plus, higher prices might encourage miners to ramp up production, adding to supply.
Central banks could also pull back on their gold purchases due to these elevated prices, further tempering gold’s upward momentum. Meanwhile, the US equity markets are showing signs of a potential bottom after a rocky stretch. If stock market volatility remains high, investors will likely stick with gold for safety. But if Trump softens his trade stance and supports equities, we could see a stock rally that triggers profit-taking in gold as risk appetite returns. The balance between these factors will be crucial in determining gold's path forward.
