Dark rumblings in the British Isles portend the betrayal of the largest democratic exercise in the nation’s long history. Storm clouds gather in the form of elitist politicians seeking to tie the United Kingdom – once a proud, independent nation – to the increasingly fragmented European Union project. As the official deadline for leaving this European Superstate approaches, it seems that elected members of Parliament are determined to override the will of the British people in a capitulation that will mark the death knell of their freedom.

Will the U.K. forever be trapped in a political union with no hope of escape? Will the British Deplorables take to the streets to demand democracy be served? And is there any doubt remaining in the minds of the electorate that the government has its own agenda that must be served out as thin gruel in this ongoing saga?
Each week, we’ll be examining the machinations and plots that infect British politics.

The Dates, The Decisions
On March 29, Britain is set to leave the European Union. Under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the U.K. gave its two-year notice of withdrawal, and that deadline is fast approaching. You might assume that Brexit is a done deal and that this nation of shopkeepers (as Napoleon described his eventual victors) should be negotiating new trade arrangements with the rest of the world. But, no, there are further machinations taking place.

The 2016 referendum asked a simple question: Should the U.K. remain part of the E.U.? Once this was decided in an historic vote, the follow-up question should have been, simply: When do we leave? Yet this question – that was handed to the British voting public – morphed into a vicious hydra of how we leave, what deal should be in place with the E.U., and how much power should remain in the hands of the unelected bureaucrats of Brussels?

The British government has decided, in its all-too-finite wisdom, that exiting the union on simple World Trade Organization (WTO) terms would be a poison pill for the economy. Remember that this is the same government that wrongly forecasted Britain would enter immediate recession upon a Leave vote. The Conservative Party under Prime Minister Theresa May is left pitiably scabbling for scraps of compromise from unbending fanatics who have stated that “Britain must be punished” for the crime of daring to leave their precious club. As Mr. Brexit himself, Nigel Farage, points out, the withdrawal agreement so far is more like a surrender document signed under the barrel of a gun by a defeated nation.


Deal Or No Deal
May’s ministers presently are attempting to get minor concessions to a withdrawal agreement, brokered by May but rejected by Parliament, with little luck. The opposition Labour Party has finally, after three years of dalliance, decided that what’s needed now – at the 11th hour – is another referendum to make sure the supposedly idiotic plebeians know exactly what they voted for the first time.

And through it all, the recalcitrant E.U. leaders smugly state that not only is there no dealing to be done but also those who dared to orchestrate Brexit have “a special place in hell.”
Yet what is it that the British public actually want? A recent Politico poll asked which scenario the respondents would prefer. The option and responses were:

1. Delaying the U.K.’s exit from the E.U. to negotiate a different deal: 15.6%
2. Remaining in the E.U.: 31.5%
3. Leaving the E.U. with the government’s deal: 16.4%
4. Leaving the E.U. without a deal: 21.6%

At first glance, it seems that remaining in the E.U. has the highest amount of support, until you realize that this is a weighted question. You see, although remaining part of the E.U. project has the support of 31.5% of people (down from 48% of voters in 2016), the other three options all support leaving. In fact, 53.6% of respondents want out one way or the other. (The other responders to the poll opted for “don’t know.”)

Why The Disconnect?
Surely in a representative democracy, the elected politicians should make a reasonable effort to carry out the majority wishes of the electorate, especially if through an act of Parliament, the aforementioned politicians had agreed to carry out the will of the people.

So why is it that actually achieving Brexit is proving more difficult? It could be, as the Remain- favoring Members of Parliament suggest, that leaving is just far too complicated and an impossible task. If this is the case, it would make sense to persevere in pulling the plug now while the going is good rather than be stuck in a painful extrication procedure as the whole project collapses (as many economists now predict).

Or is the more likely scenario that of the 650 Members of Parliament, representing the 650 constituencies of the United Kingdom, the majority of them personally favor remaining, and as such ignore what their voters demanded? As it turns out, only 156 MPs openly backed leaving the E.U., yet more than 400 constituencies voted the same. This shows that a vast majority of MPs are not respecting the vote given by their own electorate.

If there were ever an argument to be made for a British Electoral College, it is this. The vote to leave the European Union was won by a slim margin in terms of overall votes, but by area and constituency it was a huge au revoir from almost everywhere but London, the capital city. That the sheer number of people living in one small area of the U.K. have the ultimate sway over the direction and lives of those from whom they are so far removed shows us that the present system is deeply flawed.

Anger is at boiling point in Britain. Demonstrators are taking to the streets in growing numbers. Belief in the value of voting is being eroded day by day, and the murmured chatter in back rooms and bars across the nation is one of disgust and righteous indignation. When change fails to come through the ballot box, the nation will fall to chaos, and the social contract may be irreparably broken.

The people are trumped by the issue of Proportional Representation. Just think about it. A minority controls the silent majority ?

The Province of Quebec also makes an excellent point about that. The CAQ elected on October 1, 2018 in Quebec makes the point. Look at all the turmoil that they are causing just because they now have the majority.

How can we allow the Minority to control the Majority We are powerless until the next election this October 19, 2019. You can see by my two open positions LONG on Silver & Gold that there is no need to do anything at the moment.

The US Dollar Index is UP because of the decision of the ECB and Draghi today.

You can see that EUR/USD is weaker and that affects the strength of the US dollar as you know.

However Gold and Silver are behaving well with the strong dollar so it is a matter of patience.

Regardless your protection is LIMIT OUT and your STOP LOSS.

Trade Isn't China's Only Worry

Trade is only one manifestation of much deeper economic insecurities and imbalances.

China's enormous successes--raising hundreds of millions out of poverty, landing a rover on the dark side of the moon, etc.--are well known. Less appreciated is China's increasing vulnerability to financial instability arising from asymmetries that cannot be resolved by tweaking trade policies.
As this article explains, The China Story That Is Far Bigger Than Apple, China's trade balance--trade surpluses for decades-- is close to slipping into trade deficits.

At the same time, China's once-mighty pool of savings has diminished as consumption has risen. As a result, China now needs foreign investment more than it did in the previous era.

Chinese businesses have borrowed around $2 trillion in US dollar-denominated debt in the past few years, requiring the acquisition of dollars to service the debt.

So far this sounds like a typical case of a fast-growth economy maturing into a trade-deficit, debt-dependent consumption economy.
What the article misses the staggering rise in the cost of living in China over the past two decades. Some services are still dirt-cheap--subway fares are extremely cheap--and private healthcare is a mere fraction of healthcare costs in the U.S.


But other costs--housing, food, clothing, etc.--have shot up to the point that our on-the-ground correspondents report that living expenses aren't much different than in the U.S.

Officially, inflation is low in China, but the reality is not so cheery: "Domestic sentiment is definitely very bad, perhaps even worse than during the 2008 global financial crisis," said Fred Hu.

Recall that wages for college graduates are around $1,100 per month (7600 RMB), with $1,500 per month (10,000 RMB) being an above-average salary.
While white-collar wages are $13,000 annually, apartments in first and even second tier cities are similar in cost to desirable U.S. cities. Rent for a small flat is $800 USD in Shanghai, more than half the average salary, and typically cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy.

As I've noted before, roughly 3/4 of all household wealth in China is tied up in real estate, where it is effectively dead-money, earning no yield and largely illiquid outside of Beijing and Shanghai.

Reflecting a broad malaise, China's stock market has dropped by 25% in 2018 while its currency weakened against the USD (by official design, of course).
One question no one is asking seems glaringly obvious: if everything is going great in China's economy, why did President Xi feel compelled to declare himself president for life? Why is China rushing to install an Orwellian system of monitoring of behavior, online activity, etc., with heavy penalties for those who violate official norms?


Here's another obvious question: what is it saying about China's future prospects that those who know China best (i.e. insiders) are fleeing the yuan and moving their capital overseas?

We might also ask why critics of official policy are censored or even swept out of view. Are these the actions of a secure, confident ruling elite? The short answer is no, and some of that insecurity is undoubtedly the result of the increasingly fragile nature of China's growth story.
Simply put, trade is only one manifestation of much deeper economic insecurities and imbalances.

Shorting the GBPUSD ahead of the ECB

ECB President Draghi was going to speaking today and the market was already bearish about the E.U. economic numbers. Germany barely missed going into recession and Italy is in much worse shape. Chances of hearing of an interest rate hike this year is not expected. The Eurozone is slowing more than expected and this continues to create downward pressure on the currency.

Not wanting to wait on the E.C.B. today, an opportunity to short the GBP presented itself, risking 16 pips for a potential 65 pips to our daily target at 1.3099. Price moved down but long lower wicks began to form before the U.S. open and E.C.B. Draghi’s eurozone commentary. Tightening our stop loss caused our trade to be closed at yesterday’s low as price retraced going into the U.S. open.

The USD gained more strength as the session continued and moved up to test its December high. Equity markets moved lower as “risk off” sentiment drove traders to safer asset classes.

Tomorrow we have the NFP release early in the U.S. session and it tends to create significant volatility – so be careful. Although the USD looks heavy at its current level, and the U.S. economy is slowing…it remains healthy and stronger than the alternatives. President Trump no doubt wants a weaker USD particularly with the record trade imbalance figure released yesterday but the market so far is not accommodating him this week. I remain USD bullish overall.

Notes From Underground: It’s a Drag Listening to Draghi Get Old

ECB President Mario Draghi’s press conference was, once again, another act of flim-flam as he PIVOTED away from any tightening for the next [FILL IN THE YEAR]. There was NO SURPRISE as the TLTRO was well telegraphed various news outlets in recent weeks. What’s amazing is that the currency markets were surprised by Draghi’s press conference as the U.S. DOLLAR staged a sizable rally, reaching its highest level in more than three months. The YEN was stronger as the weak stock markets provided a sense of Japanese repatriation of invested capital, while GOLD performed dismally.

The GOLD needs to rally Friday or it will be time to exit the gold/currency crosses that have been a solid trade for the last three months. Yes, the strong dollar acted to keep GOLD down as the algos are configured for that correlation but the ECB pivot put a major bid to global bonds and, even more importantly, short-dated rates.THERE IS A BLIND CHASE FOR YIELD BUT FOR OUR CONCERNS THIS IS THE QUESTION: How much risk are you willing to absorb for an extra 15 basis points?

The U.S. 2/10 curve is 15 points for an extra eight years of duration risk .In an environment polluted by Draghi and company’s negative interest rate policy, coupled with deep discussions about modern monetary theory (and no constraints on debt), purchasing long-term sovereign debt is a fool’s mission. I don’t care what course others may take but for me I will stay in short duration.

***While the GOLD failed to rally with the ECB’s capitulation, the EQUITY markets also failed to sustain their recent strength. Even though the EURO declined, the DAX and Stoxx 50 failed to hold their early rallies. The entire board with the GOLD actually had a whiff of deflation as almost the commodity complex struggled to react positively to declining interest rates. The rationale for the ECB’s action was the headwinds coming from a slowing global economy and political uncertainty stemming from Brexit, Italy and coming European elections.

This week, the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of Canada had policy announcements. These central banks both used the global slowdown as reasons to keep monetary policy accommodative for the foreseeable future. Even the recent FOMC hawk Lael Brainard was speaking Thursday about the slowdown in China, Germany, Japan and the entire euro area as a reason to be prudent and patient for a policy of “watchful waiting.” The ECB pivot has trapped the FED into doing nothing regardless of the DATA. President Trump will probably be tweeting his concerns about the relative strength of the DOLLAR because of the “too tight” FOMC.

On Friday we get the February PAYROLLS. Market consensus is for an addition of 185,000 jobs, a 4.0 percent jobless rate and a 0.3 percent gain in average hourly earnings. But in an unusual position for my analysis, this data is like Scarlett O’Hara: Frankly I don’t give a damn. The action by the world’s central banks has relegated data to be insignificant compared to the action to keep accommodative policy in place, which is putting upward pressure on the DOLLAR.

Can Jerome Powell deflect White House criticism coupled with EQUITY MARKET ANGST to tighten policy, especially if the dollar strength puts downward price pressure on imports? If my analysis is correct, the yield curves OUGHT to steepen following the EMPLOYMENT REPORT.

The gold should also find a bid to salvage a dismal week. I will be patient following the jobs report to allow the markets to tell me if the analysis has merit. Preserve capital while waiting for the picture to unfold. Mario Draghi has battered the world with a policy of “whatever it takes” to save the euro and the EU.

Lower for longer is its battle cry and the fallout is causing major systemic problems. How long will President Trump tolerate a weakening euro before threatening the EU with tariffs? Exit Mario Draghi, pursued by a BEAR.

The Perils of Trading Your Plan

We commonly hear the advice that traders should "stick to their plans" and that planning and remaining true to plans is the epitome of discipline and the key to success.

It ain't necessarily so.

Let's take an analogy:

If I meet with a person for the first time in a counseling session, I don't go into the session with a treatment plan. That would be crazy. Rather, I listen to what the person says, look for patterns in the issues they present, and then come up with an idea of what might be going on. I'll run that by the individual and, together, we'll develop a plan for addressing those problems. Very often the plan will be grounded in the kind of helping that research has found to be useful for the issues presented.

If I were to start the session with a plan for intervention, the therapy would be doomed from the outset. I would be imposing my views and understandings on this other person without listening to what is actually going on.

Surprisingly, many traders go into a day or week with their plans firmly cemented. They don't wait to listen to the market and detect themes. They decide that the next move will be up or down and they place trades accordingly.

Folks, that is not trading a plan. It is trading a bias. If you don't listen to the market and instead impose your own view of what *should* happen in price action, you are not sticking to a plan. You're sticking to your bias.

A true plan, whether for medical patients, counseling clients, or markets, outlines different possibilities for different presenting challenges. It's really a decision tree, which you navigate by collecting information. A treatment plan comes from a thorough history taking and diagnosis. A trading plan similarly comes from an examination of history and a "diagnosis" of how buyers and sellers are behaving in the here and now.

The key skill is listening with an open mind. When we focus on formulating our plan, we're consulting ourselves, not the market. There's a lot to be said for coming into the trading day or week with hypotheses, not conclusions.

Here's an interesting set of statistics. During 2016, the correlation between today's volume and tomorrow's volume in SPY has been about +.68. The correlation between today's true trading range and tomorrow's has been above +.60. Both are in line with long-term averages. The correlation between daily price change today and daily price change tomorrow in SPY is -.11. In other words, the recent past tells us much more about who will be in the market and how much the market will move than which way the market will move.

But wait, you might say, perhaps there is more consistency of price movement on an intraday basis. During 2016, if we look at 5-minute bars for SPY, we find an almost identical pattern. The correlation between the current bar's volume and the next bar's volume has been +.75. The correlation between the current bar's range and the next bar's range has been +.69. But the correlation between the current bar's price change and the next bar's change has been -.03.

Given these stats, as a trader you'd want to have an open mind as to market participation (after all, about 50% of the variance in volume is *not* accounted for by prior volume), but especially as to price behavior. We might think one thing or another with respect to market trend or mean reversion. The reality is that only about 1% of the variability in price direction in the next period is accounted for by the price movement in the present period.

In an interesting recent post, Mike Bellafiore from SMB draws upon a recent TED talk to make the distinction between thinking like a scout and thinking like a soldier. The scout reads the terrain and looks for what is happening now. The soldier defends terrain and follows battleplans. In an environment characterized by high uncertainty, the open mindset of a scout is necessary. If we become too locked into what has just happened, we can easily fail to see what is going on now.

Conversely, if we're following battle plans as a soldier, we must be mentally prepared for the "fog of war" and uncertainties of battle. Those statistics tell us that, in terms of directional price movement, noise is very high relative to signal. Regardless of our time frame, we will face uncertainty during the life of our trade. How we deal with that uncertainty greatly impacts how we manage our positions. The wise trader might follow a plan, but never stops being a scout. It's when markets significantly deviate from their normal noise that opportunities arise.

Surely, by now, you know the drill. The price of COMEX Digital Silver rallies. Price breaks key technical level. Banks then increase the float of available contracts. Price stalls. Price crashes. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

So The Banks increased the total float by 45,000 contracts on the way up and have decreased it by 35,000 contracts on the way down. So where did these 45,000 contracts, representing 225,000,000 ounces of digital silver, come from? That’s easy. FantasyLand! The Banks, with no intention to ever deliver any actual physical silver, create digital silver from nothing. They then sell the contracts to Spec hedge and trading funds, which purchase these derivatives on margin and with no intention of ever demanding physical delivery of actual silver. These funds only seek “silver exposure”.


(You should now ask yourself: “Since that’s the case, how is the trading of these fraudulent contracts allowed to determine the physical price?” Good question.)

On January 3rd, COMEX Digital Silver broke up and through its 200-day moving average. The Spec trading and hedge funds got all excited and demanded more COMEX silver exposure. The Banks, confident that they’d never be asked to deliver any actual metal (and supremely confident that they could win this game again), issued new contracts to meet the Spec demand.

And why do The Banks continue to play these games with price? That’s easy. PROFIT! Let’s just say that JPMorgan alone added 20,000 of the 40,000 contracts in January. With their 150,000,000 ounces in the vault, they could short up to 30,000 contracts on The COMEX and theoretically call it a “hedge”. Let’s say their average short point in January was $15.90/oz. (I don’t know. I’m just guessing off of the chart). And now, over the last week, they’ve closed out these shorts, buying them back as The Specs rushed for the exits, particularly after the 50-day and 200-day were broken back on Friday. For the sake of simplicity, let’s assume that the average cost to buy back and cover these 20,000 contracts was $15.40

This would mean that JPM just made 50¢ on 20,000 contracts, with each contract representing 5,000 ounces. Thus, by this simple example, the prop desk at JPM just made a cool $50,000,000 in a relatively riskless trade… riskless because they have near-complete monopolistic control of the silver COMEX, by virtue of their holding 49% of the total vault. https://www.sprottmoney.com/Blog/jpmorgans-dominat…

Does this mean that silver is doomed and will never be allowed to break free and sustain a rally? Not necessarily. However,it should give you pause to consider again just how difficult it will be to finally break free of this down trend that JPM and their fellow conspirators have enforced for the past three years.

But there is such a thing as “Economic Mother Nature”, and you can see her on the chart above. Since JPM established this line 2.5 years ago, all dips save one have been followed by a sharp reversal… that ONE being last July-August. With price near $15, which should be pretty strong support, we should be looking for a tradable bottom very soon. Any bounce in COMEX Digital Silver prices will find resistance again at many of the same levels that provided resistance in December and January… and you KNOW that JPM will be on the offer again with another 20,000 shorts, with the plan of extracting another $50,000,000 profit. However, this doesn’t mean that we can’t also profit by knowing in advance what the plan will be the next time price moves toward $16.30.


In the end, we should still expect Spec digital and investor physical demand to overrun The Banks’ devious and criminal manipulation. But, obviously, it’s NOT going to be easy, and as COMEX Digital Gold eventually moves toward $1500 in the months ahead, the gold:silver will likely see insane new all-time highs of 85:1 or even 90:1. You must understand that the historical anomaly of this ratio is entirely due to the fraudulent pricing system, and that this, too, will normalize once the scheme finally fails.


For now, just look for this soon-to-be-realized short-term bottom in silver. It may be two more weeks before the turn back higher is obvious, as we might not see it until after the March FOMC. However, it’s coming, and for the gamblers and traders out there, the possibility will exist for a trading profit again… just as we saw in November-January as we chronicled the move from $14.40 to $14.80, through $15.00 and $15.80, and then toward (and falling just short) of our $16.30-$16.50 target. The next two years will be rewarding for precious metal investors. While it will be possible to accumulate fiat through aggressive trading, your best strategy remains the consistent acquisition of physical metal. And owning real, physical gold and silver is easy!
