Last week, Nomura's cross-asset strategist Charlie McElligott who correctly predicted the aggressive steepening in the yield curve observed in recent weeks as traders embraced a late-cycle reflation trade, and who has been pounding the table on a (violent) rotation out of growth and into value stocks, laid out a sequence of events that would lead the market to the "long awaited" selloff (incidentally, a true selloff, not the gentle turbulence observed on Monday).


Now, there is one even more bearish technical catalyst to consider.

As McElligott writes in his latest note, referring to the dynamic he has been discussing recently in terms of the CTA Trend model’s US Equities extremely over-weighted 1Y window (where 90% of the overall model signal input across the five horizons), the window of "mechanical" sell-trigger levels for the trend-following community, is “kicking-off” in the coming-days—and thus moves us closer to triggering systematic trend fund "deleveraging" looking-out. The timing would coincide with his prior "Ides of March" warning, and would strike in about two weeks, coinciding with the March Op-Ex pullback phenomenon, and commencement of corporate “buyback blackout” at same time.

As a reminder, Nomura's current CTA position estimates are “+100% Max Long” almost uniformly across the board (including SPX, RTY, NDX, EuroStoxx 50, Nikkei 225, FTSE100< CAC40, Hang Seng, Hang Seng CH and ASX), and only the DAX and Kospi still see CTAs net short.

It also goes without saying that US Equities remain the global “risk-asset bellwether,” so any potential inflection points are critical to watch-for specifically with SPX, NDX and RTY.


The punchline, however, is that although current levels to hold the “Max Long” remain well-above any deleveraging/sell-triggers, according to McElligott, over the coming weeks those “breakpoints” at which the 1Y model would flip to a sell signal are moving higher, closer to where the S&P and other major equity indexes are trading now.

So where are these upcoming trigger points?

As shown in the chart below, over the next week Nomura expects the CTA "sell level" to move up nearly 50 handles, and over the next two to three weeks, expects to see the “sell level” leap a very significant 90 handles CLOSER to "at the market" — which means that the market is at risk of seeing a very leveraged strategy turning a NET SELLER if we were to see those catalysts I’ve discussed over the past two weeks (see my “IDES OF MARCH” piece) dictate even just a smallish pullback in index.

We addressed this issue most recently in "The $6.4 Trillion Question: How Many BBB Bonds Are About To Be Downgraded" while the broader question of the "next bond crisis" was address in "Over $1 Trillion In Bonds Risk Cut To Junk Once Cycle Turns." It wasn't just us, however, with financial luminaries, regulators and investors such as the Fed, the BOE, the IMF, Oaktree's Howard Marks, Doubleline's Jeff Gundlach, JPMorgan, and Guggenheim all warning that the "fallen angel" threat is arguably the most serious challenge facing the US corporate bond market during the next recession.

And now, it's the turn of the central banks' central bank, the Bank of International Settlements, to join the bandwagon, warning that the surging supply of corporate debt in the riskiest, BBB investment-grade category has left markets vulnerable to a crash once economic weakness triggers a bout of rating downgrades, and sends over $1 trillion in IG bonds, or fallen angels, right into junk bond purgatory.

Highlighting numbers which have been discussed previously, the BIS notes that in 2018, BBB-rated bonds accounted for about 45% of U.S. and European mutual fund portfolios, up from only 20% in 2010, according to the BIS, and cautions that due to rating trigger limitations, many investors may have to sell those bonds if they fall out of the investment-grade scale.


And, once an economic downturn prompts credit-rating cuts, this could trigger a market crash as investors dump newly ineligible debt from their portfolios, according to the BIS, precisely what we warned about last October warning that over $1 trillion in bonds could be downgraded during the next downturn, effectively doubling the size of the entire US junk bond market.

The BIS' warning boils down to this: a wave of downgrade would result in a liquidation firesale as all those who held on to hundreds of billions in IG debt are suddenly forced to liquidate, potentially resulting in a bidless market:
“If, on the heels of economic weakness, enough issuers were abruptly downgraded from BBB to junk status, mutual funds and, more broadly, other market participants with investment grade mandates could be forced to offload large amounts of bonds quickly,” wrote analysts at the the Basel-based institution in a quarterly report.


“While attractive to investors that seek a targeted risk exposure, rating-based investment mandates can lead to fire sales.”

This isn't the first time the BIS has cautioned about the risk of a firesale: BIS previously warned about excesses in lending to leveraged companies. Still, the premium for holding risky corporate debt has narrowed in 2019 with an “exceptionally strong” performance entirely erasing a selloff in European credit in the fourth quarter of 2018, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Ironically, while much of the financial press was obsessing over the risk of "fallen angels" in late 2018 - about a year after we first highlighted said risk - as bond prices were tumbling, and threatened to create a self-fulfilling prophecy of lower prices, translating into ratings downgrades, and thus, even lower prices, ever since the late December dovish reversal by the Fed, the BBB space has been one of the best performing subsectors in the broader corporate bond market.


In fact, as Bank of America noted last week, when it highlighted Verizon's comments from a securities analyst meeting in New York noting that this company, the third largest BBB-rated name in our index, is clearly aware that its footprint in the debt world is so large they are forced to be super focused on deleveraging, should Verizon follow through with their plans that could lead to positive ratings outlooks, which would make the company a candidate to return to the A-rated bucket.


That means that contrary to the BIS' warning, rising angel risk is suddenly more relevant than the fallen angel risk markets - and now the BIS - are so focused on. This, as BofA admitted, is one reason the bank prefer BBBs - especially large ones.


It's not just Verizon: as BofA noted, the recent struggles for Kraft Heinz - the 20th largest BBB issuers - demonstrate that IG ratings matter for this BBB rated name as they rely on acquisitions to buy growth, and thus need access to the IG primary market. Whether they ultimately are able to successfully defend their IG rating is anyone's guess, but the 36% dividend cut implies a meaningful transfer of value from shareholders to bond holders. Hence, while the stock tanked 27% two weeks ago, credit spreads actually widened just a modest 13bps.


This means that instead of "fallen angel" risk, the biggest BBB names in the US are actually subject to "Rising angel" risk, i.e., the possibility of being upgraded to the A bucket as companies - worried about their balance sheet prospects - start to aggressively pursue debt deleveraging. Of course, once the current "everyone loves bonds" euphoria passes, and investors once again turn their focus on fundamentals, the party will be over, and the wholesale selling of BBBs will resume because whether in 2020 or later, a recession is coming, and the companies that will be most impacted will be the names in the list above. The only question is when will the market again start discounting that.

Surely, by now, you know the drill. The price of COMEX Digital Silver rallies. Price breaks key technical level. Banks then increase the float of available contracts. Price stalls. Price crashes. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

On the chart, it looks like this:
So The Banks increased the total float by 45,000 contracts on the way up and have decreased it by 35,000 contracts on the way down. So where did these 45,000 contracts, representing 225,000,000 ounces of digital silver, come from? That's easy. FantasyLand!

The Banks, with no intention to ever deliver any actual physical silver, create digital silver from nothing. They then sell the contracts to Spec hedge and trading funds, which purchase these derivatives on margin and with no intention of ever demanding physical delivery of actual silver. These funds only seek "silver exposure".
(You should now ask yourself: "Since that's the case, how is the trading of these fraudulent contracts allowed to determine the physical price?” Good question.)


On January 3rd, COMEX Digital Silver broke up and through its 200-day moving average. The Spec trading and hedge funds got all excited and demanded more COMEX silver exposure. The Banks, confident that they'd never be asked to deliver any actual metal (and supremely confident that they could win this game again), issued new contracts to meet the Spec demand.

And this is Econ 101. If the supply of any good increases by the same percentage as the demand for said good, price should remain constant. (This comprehensive explanation from two years ago: https://www.tfmetalsreport.com/blog/...t-manipulation)


And why do The Banks continue to play these games with price? That's easy. PROFIT! Let's just say that JPMorgan alone added 20,000 of the 40,000 contracts in January. With their 150,000,000 ounces in the vault, they could short up to 30,000 contracts on The COMEX and theoretically call it a "hedge". Let's say their average short point in January was $15.90/oz. (I don't know. I'm just guessing off of the chart). And now, over the last week, they've closed out these shorts, buying them back as The Specs rushed for the exits, particularly after the 50-day and 200-day were broken back on Friday. For the sake of simplicity, let's assume that the average cost to buy back and cover these 20,000 contracts was $15.40


This would mean that JPM just made 50¢ on 20,000 contracts, with each contract representing 5,000 ounces. Thus, by this simple example, the prop desk at JPM just made a cool $50,000,000 in a relatively riskless trade... riskless because they have near-complete monopolistic control of the silver COMEX, by virtue of their holding 49% of the total vault. https://www.sprottmoney.com/Blog/jpmorgans-dominat...

Does this mean that silver is doomed and will never be allowed to break free and sustain a rally? Not necessarily. However,it should give you pause to consider again just how difficult it will be to finally break free of this down trend that JPM and their fellow conspirators have enforced for the past three years.

But there is such a thing as "Economic Mother Nature", and you can see her on the chart above. Since JPM established this line 2.5 years ago, all dips save one have been followed by a sharp reversal... that ONE being last July-August. With price near $15, which should be pretty strong support, we should be looking for a tradable bottom very soon. Any bounce in COMEX Digital Silver prices will find resistance again at many of the same levels that provided resistance in December and January... and you KNOW that JPM will be on the offer again with another 20,000 shorts, with the plan of extracting another $50,000,000 profit. However, this doesn't mean that we can't also profit by knowing in advance what the plan will be the next time price moves toward $16.30.


In the end, we should still expect Spec digital and investor physical demand to overrun The Banks' devious and criminal manipulation. But, obviously, it's NOT going to be easy, and as COMEX Digital Gold eventually moves toward $1500 in the months ahead, the gold:silver will likely see insane new all-time highs of 85:1 or even 90:1. You must understand that the historical anomaly of this ratio is entirely due to the fraudulent pricing system, and that this, too, will normalize once the scheme finally fails.


For now, just look for this soon-to-be-realized short-term bottom in silver. It may be two more weeks before the turn back higher is obvious, as we might not see it until after the March FOMC. However, it's coming, and for the gamblers and traders out there, the possibility will exist for a trading profit again... just as we saw in November-January as we chronicled the move from $14.40 to $14.80, through $15.00 and $15.80, and then toward (and falling just short) of our $16.30-$16.50 target. The next two years will be rewarding for precious metal investors. While it will be possible to accumulate fiat through aggressive trading, your best strategy remains the consistent acquisition of physical metal. And owning real, physical gold and silver is easy! It can be held at a trusted gold bullion storage company or in your own, personal safe. You can hold it in gold bullion coins or silver bullion bars. Take your pick. Just be sure that you regularly acquire physical metal as central bank policies turn and this new bull market in precious metals continues.

Notes From Underground: MMT Is Gaining Velocity

We at NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND have discussed the issue of MODERN MONETARY THEORY. Now, the battle lines are drawn over the possibilities of a benign outcome to the practical basis of the so-called printing press. Yes, the simplification of MMT bothers its disciples, but the printing press is in essence what the theory purports to avow: Don’t worry about debt, because enough money flooding the system will not push interest rates higher but rather lower as banks take on massive reserves to put out the bid that’s pushing interest rates persistently lower.

Until last week the center of the public debate was the FOUR QUESTIONS Paul Krugman asked Stephanie Kelton. The foundation of the MMT school is that the doctrine of the neo-Keynesian school is flawed and the theoretical underpinnings of MMT corrects the flaws. My stance is that if the MMT is correct then Krugman and others OUGHT to return their NOBEL PRIZES.


I will not reprise the argument here because the academic nature of it bears little consequence for the purposes of NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND. Most of my criticisms of MMT have been of the flawed model it seems to revolve upon. After hours of research, my limited understanding of MMT is that it’s based on a CLOSED SYSTEM and leaves no room for understanding the significance of the DOLLAR’s ROLE as the world’s reserve currency.


Again, why would I want to hold an asset that can be devalued through the utilization of massive amounts of debt? Want to go to war? Want to fund every social program ever conceptualized? Want to fund the NEW GREEN DEAL? Just keep issuing debt and the central bank will provide the funds via its printing press. In the closed system there is no firewall between fiscal and monetary policy. The sovereign could merely print its way to prosperity in a similar fashion of the Swiss National Bank, the perpetual wealth creation machine.


The SYNTHESIS of monetary and fiscal policy was the ah-ha moment for Richard Nixon when he gained control over Arthur Burns during his reign as Fed chairman.

The same was true when Lyndon Johnson decided to fund the Vietnam War and the War on Poverty without a tax increase and then tried to get Chairman Martin to abstain from raising interest rates to slow the economy. The outcomes from a harmonized fiscal/monetary union did not bode well for the U.S. or the world.

On Tuesday, both Larry Summers and Kenneth Rogoff joined in the chorus of MMT criticism. It was to be expected that Krugman’s brethren from the economics profession would reply as Kelton attempts to reveal the giants of modern economics to be shams. Rogoff’s response is worth reading as he tackles many of the relevant issues confronting MMT:
1. Debt levels do matter in a world in which fiat currency is the coin of the realm and U.S. depends on foreigners purchasing its debt. “The US is lucky that it can issue debt in dollars, but the printing press is not a panacea. If investors become more reluctant to hold a country’s debt they probably will not be too thrilled holding its currency,either.”

This is a critical point for readers of NOTES. A printing press may result in the financial repression of a closed, domestic economy but when the panacea is applied to an open global economy with floating currencies backed by the GOODWILL and FIDUCIARY responsibility of the currency issuer, chaos and pandemonium are certain to follow. MMT wipes out the SYSTEMIC FIDUCIARY, the same result that was accomplished with the repeal of Glass-Steagall in the U.S. With no fiduciary responsibility why would any investor wish to hold U.S. assets?

2. Rogoff notes that the current U.S. situation is treated with benign neglect as the DOLLAR “has become increasingly dominant in global and trade finance. For the moment, the world is quite content to absorb more dollar debt at remarkably low interest rates.” For the moment is the key phrase and brings me back to the wonder theory posited by one of the greatest traders I had the pleasure to know, Richard Dennis. Dennis maintained that investors purchase certain assets based on the SLOWER FOOL THEORY: You will be able to exit before those with lesser knowledge or intuitive skills.

3. Rogoff continues by admonishing the FED for some of its post-financial crisis policies. The criticism make the case for why the yield curves ought to be steepening. Because if the FED were performing in the most efficient manner, they would be funding QE through via issuance of massive amounts of ONE-WEEK DEBT, continually rolling it without the massive balance sheet buildup of long-duration bonds. Rogoff fears that the outcome will result in MMT being the left’s version of the right’s view of Reagan’s supply-side economics. “Misguided ideas may yet drag the issue of US central-bank independence to center stage.” President Donald Trump will morph into Richard Nixon should he decide to run for re-election.

As the political left raises the issue of the irrelevance of deficits, it is smoothing the runway for funding gaps to soar to new heights. Remember, the deficit is roughly A TRILLION and counting in a booming economy. Why would anyone wish to hold U.S. assets with the massive political uncertainty highlighting the public debate on deficits and the utilitarian value of the modern printing press?


In June 2016, I asked then-Fed Governor Jerome Powell who guarantees the debt of the ECB. He casually answered: “They have a printing press.” Political economy indeed.

QUESTION: Hey Martin
First of all, great work with the new Socrates. Thank you very much for getting it to us.

You have said that rates are exploding with fed raising rates for the pension funds and because of the lost confidence in government, at least here in Europe.
Am I correct when I take what you have said, as European, to invest in short term US government paper, short term US corporate paper?
That way I won’t get much yield but I get to benefit from the currency also?

Isn’t floating rate paper also good in times like this?

I also get that there is no other place, so the Dow will go up so I want some exposure to that also?
The commodities are bottoming in 2020 so I want to get some exposure to them also?

But how about real estate?

We as small investors don’t have any other choice but REITs, especially apartment REITs and you have talked against them, saying that they are volatile. So is it best to AVOID REITs and that way real estate all together?

Even if it is a hard asset and a inflation hedge? Also as a European it would not hurt to have some USD income?

With the taxes going up and socialists getting in to power all over I guess it is better to invest in accumulating funds instead of distributing ones?

If you could please find the time to comment on this. I know that there are lots of people asking the same questions as I am.

ANSWER: We are all connected. There is no possible way for any country to move counter-trend to the whole. The European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan have destroyed their bond markets. Their stupid idea of Quantitative Easing and lowering rates to zero and negative was under their theory that people would borrow if it was cheap enough.

Over the years, I have received calls from banks asking me if I wanted to borrow money. They call because we run high cash balances and have no debt. They always want to lend money to people who do not need it, but that then begs the question, what would I do with it anyway? If you have nothing in mind you want to buy then you are not interested in borrowing. Yes, there are margin loans for investors in shares. But I am talking about borrowing to expand or buy some business.

That is what the Central Banks failed to grasp. If there is no CONFIDENCE in the future, you will not borrow at any rate.
The Bank of Japan could simply agree to tear up its federal bonds. That would impact its balance sheet whereas Japanese bonds are not really held outside the country. The ECB, on the other hand, has no such option for the debt it holds is of individual member states since there was never any consolidation of the debt federally. As far as the US Federal Reserve, its holding of federal debt is under 20% of the $22 trillion and 30% of the debt is held by foreign governments with 28% held by interagency. The US could not be saved if the Fed tore up its bonds. It is not enough.


The pension funds are also linked to government debt. Defaulting on government debt would wipe out all pension funds. The interconnectivity is not considered by so many who summarily assume we can just tear it all up.

Rates will rise to start 2020/2021 as the general public begins to see there is trouble in the wind. The Bank of Japan and the ECB have already destroyed their bond markets and there will be no going back. There will be no buyers when they need them. This is why you need to stay short-term as a buyer of debt and if you are a borrower, then lock it in for as long as you can at a fixed rate.

This is a cycle where governments are collapsing. Clearly, stay in the private sector. Blue-Chip corporate debt SHORT-TERM is better than a government. Even during the Great Depression, AAA corporate debt appreciated. The spread above US Treasury dropped from about 1.3% to 0.5% and the US was the safe haven back then as well. It was Europe which defaulted along with South America and Asia.


Real Estate is not a movable asset so it can be taxed and you cannot leave. They will raise taxes dramatically trying to survive. But governments cannot avoid their collapse for nobody is willing to step up and take decisions for the long-term.

Equities are liquid. This is going to be a game between value and liquidity. Remember! The City of Detroit suspended all debt in 1937. They resumed and paid it off with cheaper dollars in 1963. So they claim they never defaulted. Liquidity is also a top priority.

This account was started on February 27, 2019 by loveandpeace. He has now made a total of 15 trades and he has had one loss. He also has two open positions long in both Silver and Gold. He has a limit out and a stop loss of $1000 Us dollars.

I will ask loveand peace in his own words to explain why he has been able to have such extraordinary results compared to his results before he started learning from me what I have been teaching on my thread since I started it 303 pages ago on December 3, 2016.

Good day fellow traders on Forex Factory. I have been trading Forex for over 10 years now and with the incredible movements on a monthly basis which has been caused by the intervention efforts of the world's central banks trading today is much different trading before 2008. Thus RISK MANAGEMENT must be a priority for any serious forex currency trader. You should never RISK more than 5% of your trading capital on any one trade plan. I also strongly suggest that you never trade more than 20% of your total trading capital at anytime. Example - If you are trading $50,000 in US Funds NEVER have more than 20% or $10,000 US Dollars on your various trade plans always using the 5% rule for risk on each trade plan being used.

The Money Flow Trading Method is based each trading day on Risk On or Risk Off which means are the markets heading down or heading up. I use the DOW to determine this each day. When the markets head down and we have Risk Off the money flows into US Dollars first and then the money is parked usually into US Bonds so the bonds go up and the yield goes down. Buying Silver
Bullion is the cheapest way to buy silver and probably the most popular. Bullion is silver that has no rarity value (collector value) assigned to it. Products that are categorized in this way are American Silver Eagles, Canadian Silver Maple Leafs, Austrian Silver Philharmonics as well as various minted silver rounds and bars. Junk Silver
90% Silver U.S. Coins (pre-1965): These silver coins consist of dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollar coins that were minted in the United States prior to 1965. They are made up of 90% silver and are great coins to purchase if you are looking to just get your feet wet.

Historic Silver Coins
Historic silver are coins that have a special value to collectors, usually old coins that are rare like Morgans and Peace Dollars. These silver coins will carry a higher premium based upon rarity. The rarer the coin the more valuable it will be. Sometimes the silver value is the least important factor in determining the value of an old silver coin.

Morgan silver dollars are the most popular and commonly traded historic silver coin. Common date coins are valued at close to the spot price while rarer date can be worth thousands of dollars.

Purchasing these types of silver coins will cost more, but they can be very lucrative as well. Some very rare coins have performed very well over the years. For example the 1893 S Morgan in near perfect condition is worth somewhere around $500,000 and at one point it was only worth $1. This coin has been very lucrative for its owner.

Either type of silver can be a great investment over the long-term, especially as congress continues to print money to cover deficit spending. Which type you should buy will be up to what your goals and objectives are.

Silver Bullion Bars:
Bullion bars will offer you the same benefits as silver coins at a slightly lower price and lower premium. They are not as convenient and easy to store as coins. Bars come in a variety of sizes ranging from the 1oz, 5oz, 10oz, and 100oz.

Like gold, silver is now often purchased as a commodity rather than a currency, though silver and gold are readily accepted around the globe and are quickly convertible into any currency. Here is my question after reading your reply. What is the main difference you find now with what I am teaching you and what you were doing on your own before we met recently on Forex Factory ?

You can see from your results as everyone else can see that my method works for you.

Look at my results here on my FXCM UK $50,000 US dollars demo accounts. I have been in this business since 2003. I started trading real funds with my first Forex trade being on March 9, 2006.

I have traded millions and millions of US dollars. My largest account was for $100,000 US dollars and I traded with PFG Best in Chicago under LPOA.

I made 1502 Forex trades and my first 673 were all winning trades. Probably a world record. (SMILE) !!! The reason that I share this information here is because to do that I needed to take risks that were not wise. However I learned from that great Forex trading experience. My Net Profit after exactly 36 days of Forex trading from October 2, 2006 to November 6, 2006 was just over $19,000 US dollars. I have the PDF file of all those trades just in case my representations are not accepted.

The real lesson that I learned during 2008 when I was then trading again under LPOA with over $120,000 US dollars for this same client from Hong Kong. I was then an introducing Broker with FXCM in New York City.

I told my client Cyber Planet that there was NO WAY that EUR/USD would go below 120.00. It did and I had a MARGIN CALL that caused an incredible loss of funds. My client invested more funds with FXCM.

I had just seen EUR/USD go over 160.00 during early 2008 and now later in the year I had open 30 positions LONG of EUR/USD near the 120.00 mark.

The lesson was The Market Is Always Right. I then had to develop a Superior Risk Management Plan where I never trade more than 20% of my capital. If I had this rule then I NEVER would have had the Margin call.

I have now reached the skill level of Forex trading that I formed my corporation on February 14, 2012 where my corporate charter in Canada allowed me to not only trade Forex for my corporation however now I can teach as well. The way that I do things I needed my own proof to see if I could actually teach others. I was very fortunate to have Keep Calm sign up and learn from me and she accomplished amazing results as you can see from her prior posts during 2017.

I now am moving everything to my corporate website and charging the very reasonable amount of $250 US dollars registration fee paid only one time for a three month course and a monthly fee of $50 US dollars for 24/7 access to see my trades in real time and work with me during Forex trading hours.
