Currency Rally Gets Stopped At The Gate!


* BLS says 304,000 jobs created in Jan. Chuck says hogwash!
* Eurozone PPI weakens... What will the ECB do?

Good Day… And a Marvelous Monday to you! The rain finally gave way to sunshine yesterday, and it brought everyone outside to bask in the warm sun. I watched the 1st half of last night’s Super Bowl at a friend’s condo upstairs, but then came back to my place to watch what I could before sleep entered into the equation. So, congratulations to the cheaters, I mean the Patriots who won their 6th Super Bowl. We’ve begun February, so welcome to February, the month that pitchers and catchers report, and I’ll be visited by my Spring Training Buddies to start the Spring Training games at the end of this month. That means I’ll be on vacation the last week of February… I know, I know, it used to always be around the 3rd week of March, but this is when it all works out and so I’ll be absent that week. The Beatles greet me this morning with their song: Michelle… My bell, those are words that go together well, my Michelle…

Well, the currency rally that was going on late last week, got stopped at the gate by a false Employment Report by the BLS… They claim that 304,000 jobs were added in January… However the Unemployment Rate rose to 4.00% from 3.86% the previous month. And despite 800,000 furloughed Gov’t employees that were without jobs in January… When things like this happen, I refer to John Williams, of Shadow Stats (www.shadowstats.com) And he explains things for us…

“Unaffected by the government shutdown, despite 800,000 workers furloughed or forced to work without timely pay, January Payrolls gained a headline 304,000 jobs. Yet, that was in the context of the initial 312,000 December jobs gain revising lower by 90,000, to 222,000.”

Oh, woe is me… the problem with all this is not so much that fact that the BLS lied to us, but that the markets bought the numbers and swallowed them hook, line and sinker! Shouldn’t someone with an ounce of brains say, What a minute here, these numbers don’t seem kosher? But nooooooo! They decided that they would buy what the BLS was selling them. Don’t worry they’ll figure out later that is was snake oil…

The Dollar Index, which I've explained through the years is not the best example of how to value the dollar, because it is so heavily weighted with euros, has bounced around a bit lately, and is stronger this morning at 95.70, reflecting the weakness of the euro after Friday's walk down "cheaters' lane"...

To Illustrate what I'm talking about, the Petrol Currencies, which aren't a part of the components that make up the Dollar Index, are all on the rally tracks with the price of Oil above the $55 handle. The Russian ruble, Brazilian real, Canadian loonie, and Norwegian krone are all looking perky this morning...

Gold however, is getting sold in the early morning trading, and is down $7.50, after losing $3.60 on Friday. That's $11 in the past two days, after Gold had been on a good run to the upside... I would say that this is normal given the quickness with which Gold moved upward. But then NOTHING is normal about the price action in Gold these days... And haven't been since the fellow at the price manipulation controls woke up from his nap on September 8, 2011... Because all's fair in love and war, and price manipulation... I would have to say for those that don't believe in that stuff that it was about the time the dollar was strongly entrenched in its current strong dollar trend, that began when the hidden debts of the Club Med countries were discovered.

Normally I would say that this pull-back in the price of Gold would be an opportunity to buy at a cheaper level than last week... And I still want to say that, but who knows what the price manipulators are going to do next?

Have you been keeping up with the news from a financial system review that's been going on in Australia? Well, it came to a head with a final report last week, with 76 regulation problems... But with no suggestion to beak up the powerful Aussie banks... This news brought some selling pressure to the Aussie dollar (A$)… This is important stuff so I have highlighted an article on it in the FWIW section today...

Earlier this morning, the Eurozone printed their latest PPI (wholesale inflation) and on a year on year basis it has slipped to 3.0% from 4.0% last January... This is not good for consumer inflation that the European Central Bank (ECB) has held out to be the carrot on the string. The ECB wants inflation above 2% before they'll move their deposit rates out of negative territory. And this print explains the slippage in the euro from Friday...

It appears that this week will be the week that the Gov't uses to print all the delayed economic reports of the past month... For instance, today, we'll finally see the Nov. Factory Orders... Seems like it's really not useful at this point doesn't it? But it will print anyway, and when it does, I expect it to be negative.

We've still never seen Retail Sales for December... I wonder if there's a problem with the data, in that, it stinks, and the Gov't doesn't want the public to know? I wouldn't put it past the bean counters at the BLS and other Gov't agencies that report on economic data. You would think that the Gov't would have had enough time to massage the data or just let it print, as the difference between humor and tragedy is time...

To Recap... the currency rally of last week came to an abrupt halt for most of the currencies on Friday, when the BLS printed what I consider to be a farce of a jobs report saying that 304,000 jobs were created in January. Recall that they said 312,000 were created in December, but quietly, under the cloak of darkness, they BLS "revised" December's number by 88,000 jobs to the downside! There are problems in Australia with their banks, and the way they do business, and that's weighing on the A$, while the price of Oil ratchets higher and the Petrol Currencies get bought.

Like any statistical and economic model, these estimates are only as good as the model. This model is a simple representation and is not guaranteed to accurately mimic outcomes in the complex U.S. economy. Thus, these results should be viewed as an estimate to illustrate how much stimulus negative rates can provide, although the exact numbers are not definitive.


Furthermore, the analysis assumes that the effects on the economy from interest rate changes are largely unchanged in the event of a negative rate.

However, setting a negative interest rate could trigger people to save less and search for alternative ways to invest their money, potentially circumventing the negative rate. In this case, a negative interest rate would be less stimulative than my analysis suggests.

This Letter quantitatively evaluates the beneficial impact a negative Fed policy rate could have had during the recovery from the Great Recession. While it’s difficult to capture all the complexities of the economy in a model, this analysis suggests that negative rates could have mitigated the depth of the recession and sped up the recovery, though they would have had little effect on economic activity beyond 2014. The analysis also shows that the interest rate does not have to fall too deeply into negative territory to accomplish meaningful economic improvements.


In short, NIRP would have made the recession shorter and less acute according to the San Francisco Fed, and since it is impossible to argue the counterfactual, we now have "research" that sets the framework for what happens next.

Needless to say, the implication of this report is dramatic because what it suggests is that, in a tortured trial balloon just like that launched by the ECB last week according to which the next QE-driven downturn can only be solved with even more QE, so the US Federal Reserve system now has a blueprint for how to handle the next economic recession/depression, and - simply said - it will involve NIRP.

Here once can extrapolate what Rabobank's Every said last week, when he concluded that he doesn't think "the ECB realises just what a stupid mistake it has made. It is never a good thing to be spotted as a shill: crowds tend to get angry. Worse, the ECB have made a (false) economic case that QE helps inequality, when actually it exacerbates it. That means when we do more QE people will be expecting to see greater equality and will get the opposite – again, the crowd will get nasty."

Now replace the above with Fed instead of ECB and NIRP instead of QE and you can see where this is heading... and for those who can't, the answer is simple: there is now a green light to use not only more QE during the next recession, something which Powell already hinted at last week with his shocking dovish reversal, but to go all the way and drag rates negative, ignoring the fact that despite NIRP and QE currently in place, i.e., all of its monetary policy ammo, Europe's economy is once again on the verge of a recession.


And since we know what will happen when the next recession strikes, we also can extrapolate what happens when neither QE nor NIRP succeed in restoring economic growth as both the ECB and Fed have now promised: as Rabobank summarized "That means when we do more QE people will be expecting to see greater equality and will get the opposite – again, the crowd will get nasty."

We can't wait to see the analysis the world's central banks will use in several years to explain why, in agreement with Paul Krugman, civil (and no so civil) war is actually quite beneficial to GDP growth.


It’s not that the ECB can’t prove QE helped reduce unemployment; or that the jobs created are widely accepted as being low paid; or that the ECB’s survey data covers just four of the Eurozone’s diverse members; or that it is insane to argue nobody gets richer from rising equities; or that rising house prices, and rents, must mean inequality for those who don’t own houses. It’s because on closer examination, the authors are not Useful Idiots. They are shills.


The give-away is that at the end of the accompanying video explaining why the ECB has reduced inequality there are two piles of graphic money. The smaller one, lower-income households, grows. (Yay!) The larger one, richer households, shrinks as if the rich are getting less money in some kind of tax redistribution mechanism. (Yay!) That is objectively not true.

Yet it’s what they want viewers to see. That is the kind of spin you’d associate with a populist politician. As my colleague Christian Lawrence quipped after I shared the video with him, “Next the ECB will be telling us negative interest rates help the homeless.”


We were not the only ones to feel that way. The responses on Twitter were a flood of very angry rebuttals. Indeed, I don’t think the ECB realises just what a stupid mistake it has made. It is never a good thing to be spotted as a shill: crowds tend to get angry. Worse, the ECB have made a (false) economic case that QE helps inequality, when actually it exacerbates it.

That means when we do more QE people will be expecting to see greater equality and will get the opposite – again, the crowd will get nasty. The ECB have also opened the door to those same angry populists to say “If your QE can reduce inequality slightly, imagine what our kind of QE could do!” – and what intellectual defence could the ECB mount? “You can’t do that – it’s…too effective(?)”


To be sure, just hours after the ECB's claim, none other than Oaktree's Howard Marks smacked down this unprecedented stupidity, when in response to a CNBC question whether Fed’s policies have exacerbated wealth inequality, Marks said:
Well clearly they have. It’s been a -- exacerbate makes it sound like they shouldn’t have done it. They did to get us out of the global financial crisis what they had to do. A side effect of that was asset inflation which, of course, only benefited the people who own assets and that has created a widening of the net worth gulf.


So no, QE did not help reduce inequality: on the contrary it made inequality reach unprecedented proportions, resulting in the populist, anti-establishment movement sweeping across Europe... oh, and Brexit in the UK and Trump in the US. But the nuance was not lost on observers, who noted that by making this claim, the QE was merely launching a trial balloon and setting the stage for even more wonderful, noble QE.


And in keeping with carefully phrased trial balloons, earlier today the San Francisco Fed, best known for wasting millions in taxpayer funds on research to overturn what is blatantly obvious even to five year olds, released what may be the next, even more critical trial balloon, asking "How Much Could Negative Rates Have Helped the Recovery?" and finding, surprise, that it would have helped by quite a bit.


As a reminder, unlike Europe or Switzerland, where deposit rates have been negative for years, the US central bank is generally perceived as not having a mandate to take rates below the "lower bound" or negative, i.e. to implement what is affectionately known as "NIRP." And yet, according to the regional west coast Fed this is a mistake, because research from San Fran Fed's Vasco Curdia, "allowing the federal funds rate to drop below zero may have reduced the depth of the recession and enabled the economy to return more quickly to its full potential. It also may have allowed inflation to rise faster toward the Fed’s 2% target. In other words, negative interest rates may be a useful tool to promote the Fed’s dual mandate."


While the report engages in the type of tortured, goalseeked analysis that we have grown to "love" from central banks for the past decade, the same central banks who did not anticipate that their disastrous bubble-blowing policies would result in the financial crisis of 2008 (which last we checked, has not been blamed on Putin just yet), and presents the following chart to confirm that, indeed, if only the Fed had cut rates to -0.75%, the recovery would have magically been far stronger...

Tomorrow, as DB's Jim Reid reminds us, marks the first year anniversary of Powell becoming Chair of the Federal Reserve while today is his birthday. More apropos to markets, after eight meetings at the helm it was notable that last week’s was the first where the S&P 500 rose on FOMC announcement day for obvious reasons: after a year of being mostly on the hawkish side, Powell performed a 180 degree pivot in 2019.

Looking at Jim Reid's favorite economic indicator, the yield curve, following the Fed’s U-turn the probability of an inversion has fallen or at least when it occurs might have been delayed according to the DB strategist, who then looks at the only notable "false positive" in the 70-year series of yield curve inversions as a precursor to recessions, which took place in the late 1960s where the first inversion happened around 48 months before the recession, "breaking" with the 3-year max interval between curve inversion and recession.

And yet there is a reason for this false positive: what happened in the 1960s is that in the face of rising inflation but a falling stock market, the Fed made what has since been described as a "policy error" by keeping policy too loose especially in the face of higher government spending on the Vietnam War and on the start of Medicare/Medicaid.


Sound familiar? If not consider this sequence of events: the yield curve first inverted in December 1965, inflation spiked in early 1966 (with the US at full employment) and continued rising and the S&P 500 fell over 20% from January 1966 peaks.

And, just like now, the Fed seemed more concerned by the stock market and stayed on hold in 1966 and even cut rates in early 1967 as growth, fiscal spending and inflation went higher. While this likely prolonged the cycle and re-steepened the curve, it also reinforced higher inflation and by the end of 1967 the Fed were forced to reverse course and start a hiking cycle. The curve then re-inverted and by the end of the decade the recession arrived four years after the first inversion.

Reid made this point to show that cycles can be manipulated by policy makers that deviate policy away from what may have been a more appropriate course.

So assuming that the Fed, which as we explained previously was already trapped between the market on one side and the economy on the other, was merely engaging in policy error in its desperate pursuit of higher stock prices, what is the biggest risk? Well, according to a new note from Bank of America, January's combination of a strong employment report and rebounding ISM Manufacturing highlights that the key risk for investors to focus on is not recession but that the Fed eventually will resume its rate hiking cycle, just as it did in the 1960s.

As a result BofA forecasts that while financial conditions - including credit spreads - can improve relatively quickly, it appears likely the Fed will wait and monitor economic data through 2Q for confirmation the US economy is indeed sufficiently strong to weather foreign weakness, trade war and the government shutdown.


To BofA, this means the next rate hike is unlikely in 1H but probable in 2H, and as such, the bank remains overweight and bullish credit spreads, but obviously would become more negative into Fed rate hikes.
Our view remains that this hiking cycle is particularly challenging, as the Fed is the only major central bank to hike - which puts upward pressure on dollar hedging costs and leads to less demand for US fixed income (Figure 3) - and QT effectively means more fixed income supply (Figure 4).

Hence in the bank's opinion interest rate risk is particularly high this hiking cycle, because not only the yield curve, but stocks too are now entirely reliant on just when the Fed will concede it made yet another policy mistake and turn hawkish again, in the process launching the next bear market, forcing it to engage in yet another policy mistake a few months later when it will once again turn dovish, and so forth, as Powell is now nothing more than the market's whipping boy.

Those that have been following events for several years know they are under attack by an enemy that has no face and means to do them great harm. Nothing less than their sovereignty and freedom is at stake. Absolute control over people and resources is the ultimate goal.

People need to understand that the bankers need to collapse everything and leave the population in want of resources and supplies. Just like after a natural disaster when the government shows up to provide help to those that have lost everything, the bankers want to show up after the population has lost everything in a collapse, to be their savior and gain control of everyone by offering resources in exchange for compliance.
There are several actions you can take to prevent these people from gaining control over your life.


You must be able to feed yourself-
You must have a home to live in that you own free and clear-
You need to be your own energy company-
You need to be your own bank-
You need to be able to defend what you have-
You need to have skills to operate your own business-
You need to promote a community based economy-
To put it simply, you need to get out of their game and start your own. Remember, the house always wins.


The bankers can only win the game if people are dependent on the elite for everyday necessities. The bankers have created a society of dependent people that they can exploit. They can only continue to exploit people as long as they are dependent on the bankers for the things they need. Once this dependence is broken the bankers lose much of their control on society. This dependence is broken by people who can provide their own necessities.
Early Americans were largely self sufficient in many things which prevented the bankers from controlling everything. Most people used barter to get the things they needed and bankers have no control over barter transactions. They also have little control when gold and silver are used in cash transactions.

These people tried several times to build a central bank in the U.S. but were thwarted. Once the bankers created the FED in 1913, they had the mechanism to control the people.

The bankers and politicians can only win if they have absolute control over you and your family. They can only do this by controlling your access to the things you need and must get from others. By maintaining control over these things yourself, you retain that control and rob them of that power.

In many ways, freedom is a result of self sufficiency. The less you depend on others, the more freedom you have to make your own choices in life. People who make their own choices are difficult to control and once people realize they can live without the bankers and government entities the collective power of these entities falls away. The future will be either a collective society where government controls everything you do every minute of the day or it will be a free society where people make their own decisions and take responsibility for what happens. What people do today to free themselves from the control of the bankers, will determine what world we will live in tomorrow.

QE Party Goes Dry, Bank of Japan Tries to Confuse the Markets

During the selloff in December, the BOJ shed $31 billion, but in January it piled on.
Total assets on the Bank of Japan’s mammoth balance sheet, after a drop of ¥3.4 trillion ($31 billion) in December, rose by ¥4.8 trillion ($44 billion) in January, to ¥557 trillion ($5.1 trillion), the BOJ reported this morning. This shows two things:
One: The balance sheet is now 101.5% of Japan’s nominal GDP (¥549 trillion, not adjusted for inflation), which makes it over five times as large in terms of the economy as the Fed’s $4-trillion balance sheet, amounting to 19.6% of US nominal GDP ($20.6 trillion). Two: The BOJ is now proceeding with its QQE – “quantitative and qualitative easing,” as it calls this monster – in a special sort of dance: Two steps forward, one step back – increasing its balance sheet two months in a row, then in the third month unwinding about one-third of the increase of the prior two months.
This dance series started in December 2017. December 2018 had been the fifth step back. And January was the next step forward. Among QE-besotted central banks, this dance is unique. This chart shows the month-to-month changes of the balance sheet. Note that the December “step back” was maintained despite the selloff in the markets:

The above chart shows that last December, the BOJ cut its balance sheet by ¥3.4 trillion ($31 billion), a larger cut than the Fed’s QE unwind in December($28 billion). In September, the BOJ chopped its balance sheet by ¥5.4 trillion ($49 billion), larger than the Fed’s QE unwind in September ($34 billion). The prior two balance sheet cuts (March and June) were also larger than the Fed’s QE unwind during those months.

And each of the BOJ’s reductions undid between 30% (June 2018) and 42% (March 2018) of the prior two months’ increases.
The switch from regular QQE to the two-steps-forward-one-step-back QQE came without any announcement from the BOJ, which continues to say that “QQE with yield curve control” – the BOJ is targeting the entire yield curve, not just short-term yields – will be maintained for as long as needed to achieve 2% inflation.

It did add a couple of rubbery terms in its minutes of the July 2018 meeting: “sustainability” and “flexibility” of QQE. According to the minutes, the BOJ’s staff “proposed measures to enhance the sustainability of the current monetary easing” given, “for example, their effects on financial markets.” And the minutes also said that the BOJ would buy Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) in “a flexible manner.”

But the minutes reiterated that the BOJ would increase its holdings of JGBs by about ¥80 trillion a year, which the BOJ has not come anywhere near since 2016, as we’ll see in a moment.

QQE started in December 2012 as part of Abenomics. During peak QQE, in the 12-month period ended December 31, 2016, the BOJ’s assets ballooned by ¥93.4 trillion. Over the most recent 12-month period ended January 31, 2019, the BOJ added only ¥30.2 trillion to its balance sheet, the smallest such gain since March 2013:

In percentage terms, the BOJ increased its balance sheet by 5.7% over the 12-month period ended January 31, the smallest percentage increase since May 2012, before QQE had even begun.

The BOJ has been buying mostly Japanese government securities (JGBs and short-term bills). But it also buys some equity ETFs, Japanese REITs, and corporate bonds. Japanese government securities are the largest asset class on the balance sheet. The amount of these securities rose in January by ¥3.9 trillion from the prior month, to ¥471.5 trillion.


This amounts to nearly 50% of all outstanding Japanese government debt – up from about 14% in late 2012.

For the 12-month period ended January 31, the BOJ added “only” ¥25.4 trillion of JGBs and bills, a far cry from its assertions that it would add ¥80 trillion a year. It has not added ¥80 trillion of government debt since the 12-month period ended April 2017.

Clearly, the “QQE Taper” is well underway, despite whatever the BOJ may proclaim to keep everyone guessing.

The Fed has already reduced its balance sheet by over $400 billion since the start of its QE unwind in October 2017 and for now continues to run its QE unwind on automatic pilot.

The ECB tapered its massive QE to zero as of December 2018 and is currently only planning to replace securities when they mature to keep its balance sheet roughly level.

And in 2019, markets are facing a situation for the first time in a decade where the big three QE’ers – the Fed, the BOJ, and the ECB – will on net whittle down ever so slowly the assets on their combined balance sheets, with the BOJ continuing to add a smidgen, with the ECB maintaining what it has, and with the Fed continuing its roll-off.

The year 1953 was a busy one. A world still emerging from the destruction of World War II experienced success—Jonas Salk’s pill vaccine, Edmund Hillary and Tenzeng Norgay, summiting of Mount Everest. But it also experienced stalemate such as the armistice in Korea and the Soviet H-bomb. On December 9, 1953, at the end of his first year in office, Dwight Eisenhower gave a speech to the United Nations that defined his presidency. The speech became known as the “ Atoms For Peace ” speech.


The future of humanity, the president noted, depended upon checking the nuclear arms race. Peaceful uses of nuclear energy could transform human life. The United States, already leading in weapons research, would share with the world its work on nuclear power and would back an international authority to supervise civilian nuclear research. Thus, two key elements of the current nuclear environment—civilian nuclear power stations and the International Atomic Energy Agency—were announced at once.


Eisenhower had brought his desire for a way out of the arms race with him into the White House. As early as April 1953 the internal discussions of “Operation Candor” poured over ideas for publicizing American atomic research. Close allies Great Britain, Canada and France had been briefed on the concept.
Three years after Eisenhower’s speech, after the deployment of the hydrogen bomb by the United States and USSR, Egypt shut down the Suez Canal and nearly started a war. A physicist at UC Berkeley’s Radiation Laboratory (later Lawrence Livermore National Lab) pondered the use of nuclear bombs to rapidly excavate a new canal. A year later the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission announced Project Plowshare —an effort to develop civilian uses for nuclear explosives. Its name may have been coined by legendary physicist I.I. Rabi , who replied when briefed on the project, “So, you want to beat your old atomic bombs into plowshares.”


Seven decades later the fruits of “Atoms for Peace” are few but potent. Twenty percent of America’s electricity is generated by civilian nuclear power plants. Nuclear medicine saves thousands of lives a year. But the soaring visions of the early Atomic Age— nuclear-powered merchant vessels , giant spaceships to the planets , a new Central American canal—all remain technical curiosities, and mostly for good reasons.


Plowshare’s most direct applications of the bomb involved its use as a super-duper earthmoving explosive. Harbors would be dug, mountains cut through, reservoirs created, all with humongous explosions. Weaponeers already knew just how good nuclear bombs were at shoveling—they were vaporizing islands in Pacific atolls. If the pesky problem of radiation were dealt with, a whole new world of possibilities awaited.


Project Chariot would have instantly created a new deepwater harbor on the remote rocky coast of Alaska on the Bering Strait. Several hydrogen bombs would be detonated to create a comma-shaped hole in the shore almost two-thousand-feet long and thirty-feet deep. The harbor was to serve a vast new oil and coal development some miles inland. From its inception Chariot proved controversial , both for its cavalier impact assessments and its staunchest advocate: Edward Teller, the “Father of the H-Bomb.” Local opposition by Inuit communities eventually killed the project along with the lack of interest in the mineral deposits. Inuit suspicions were confirmed decades later when a researcher found radioactive soil in the planned project area—debris from a secret effects test.
Project Gnome , the first actual Plowshare test, involved another form of resource extraction. A nuclear device detonated in an underground salt formation traps enormous amounts of heat in the molten salt. Underground water turned into high-pressure steam could generate electricity in surface generators. Nuclear explosions also release enormous numbers of neutrons, which can transform common elements into rare isotopes in large quantities. Such isotopes could get trapped in the salt and get extracted easily.


The three-kiloton Gnome test on December 10, 1961, created a 90-foot-tall 170-foot-wide chamber 1300 feet below the New Mexico desert near Carlsbad. Six months later a crew entered the chamber and found little radioactivity, colored stalagmites of irradiated salt, and a temperature of 140 degrees. No usable steam pockets were found and little in the way of nuclear alchemy.

“Nuclear fracking” took the bomb out of Nevada and New Mexico. The 1967 Project Gasbuggy shot proved that bombs could force production of economic amounts of natural gas (although the product proved unsaleable due to radiation). In 1969 and 1973 additional fracking tests were made near Rifle, Colorado. The second, Project Rio Blanco, used three thirty-three-kiloton bombs in a single well.

Although nuclear tracking proved marginally successful the “nuclear shovel” remained the desideratum of Plowshare, with the great goal of a new Panama Canal as the prize. The Canal would involve a major campaign's worth of nukes, with one estimate coming in at over seven hundred bombs. These bombs would have to be exceptionally clean, as the 1962 Sedan test at the Nevada Test Site made clear. The one hundred thousand nuclear-cratering exercise produced the most fallout ever released from the Test Site—not a good look when trying to convince the public of the wisdom of such activities.

One of the last, most startling and yet most plausible studies of nuclear digging brought the Atomic Energy Commission, the Southern Pacific Railroad and the California Department of Transportation. Detailed work proved that some twenty-three bombs totaling 1.8 megatons could efficiently rip a slash through a two-mile wide range of hills in the California desert, to lay a new railroad line to Los Angeles. Project Carryall went the way of the Malibu nuclear power plant , but not before leaving its mark.

In the end, like so many other things, time and history have yielded comparable or better technologies without the Bomb's many downsides.

"No Need To Be Pessimistic" - World's Biggest Pension Fund Suffers Record Collapse In Q4

The world's largest pension fund - in the world's most demographically-challenged nation - suffered a stunning record loss in the last quarter as its Abe-supporting domestic-stock-buying-spree crushed Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF).

Bloomberg reports that GPIF lost 9.1 percent, or 14.8 trillion yen ($136 billion), in the three months ended Dec. 31, it said in Tokyo on Friday. The decline in value and the rate of loss were the steepest based on comparable data back to April 2008. Domestic stocks were the fund’s worst performing investment, followed by foreign equities. Assets fell to 150.7 trillion yen at the end of December from a record 165.6 trillion yen in September.

While global central-bank-liquidity driven gains in global stocks helped the GPIF generate returns for the previous two fiscal years, December’s global rout underscored the risks facing the fund since it revamped strategy in 2014 to accumulate stocks and pare domestic bonds - something they vehemently deny is anything but prudent independent risk-managed behavior.

Bloomberg notes that the GPIF may have little choice but to invest in equities as fixed-income yields, especially those of Japanese government debt, are too low, said Naoki Fujiwara, chief fund manager at Shinkin Asset Management Co. in Tokyo.

“It makes sense for the GPIF to hold some risk assets in this environment because yields are low globally and bond investments don’t give good returns,” Fujiwara said.

“Yet from a pensioner’s point of view, it takes too much risk on its investments.”

But that won't stop Abe (and Kuroda) from pushing their nation's "independent" pension fund administrators to keep buying the dip in domestic stocks... or else.

Analysts are mixed on what to make of this collapse... some are blindly toeing the government line that any quarter now, everything will be awesome.

Shingo Ide, the chief equity strategist at NLI Research Institute in Tokyo, points out that the GPIF’s long-term performance is more important than quarterly moves.GPIF’s cumulative investment return since fiscal 2001 was 56.7 trillion yen for an annualized 2.7 percent gain.

“There’s no need to be pessimistic just because GPIF would incur loss on its investment on a quarterly basis,” Ide said.
“For pension funds, it’s more important to focus on how they secure long-term returns rather than their quarterly performance.”

But some worry about just how much risk GPIF carries...

Still, with about half of its assets in domestic and foreign equities, the GPIF’s performance may be in danger of declining as concerns about the U.S.-China trade war and the U.K.’s departure from the European Union increase the risk of a global economic slowdown, according to Hidenori Suezawa, an analyst at SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. in Tokyo.

“Trade frictions between the U.S. and China haven’t been fully solved yet and there’s a possibility that the Brexit problem may be prolonged,” Suezawa said.
“We can’t be optimistic about the investment performance toward March.”

And yet, as we noted previously, it may be about to get even worse. As Sumitomo Mitsui strategist Ayako Sera said, the GPIF has little choice but to diversify into alternative assets and high-yield bonds if it wants higher returns because Japan’s bonds, which make up about 27% of the GPIF’s assets, have virtually zero returns (well, the may rise as high as 0.2% as per the BOJ's latest announcement) as the Bank of Japan maintains its unprecedented monetary easing.

“The GPIF’s biggest problem is it can’t keep taking in domestic bonds - especially government bonds - as a staple with Japanese interest rates so low,” Sera said.

“The fund needs to sample a wider variety of dishes.”

Apparently that's prudent banker talk for "we need to put more pensions into, well, junk." What it really is, is the famous yield creep to justify buying ever riskier securities, which of course, are "not risky" because the GPIF can hold in perpetuity, which somehow means the laws of the business cycle no longer matter.

The protests seen in France and the interference in the domestic politics of Venezuela highlight Western double standards, which stand in contrast to the respect for international law maintained by China, India and Russia.

In France on November 17, 2018, hundreds of thousands of citizens, angered by the diminishing quality of their lives, the social iniquity in the country, and the widening gap between rich and poor, took to the streets in protest. The protests can easily be encapsulated in the following slogan: “We the people against you the elite.”

This slogan has been a recurring theme throughout the West over the last three years, shaking up the British establishment with the pro-Brexit vote, discombobulating the United States with Trump's victory, overturning Italy with the Lega/Five-Star government, and bringing Merkel’s star crashing down in Germany. Now it is the turn of Macron and France, one of the least popular leaders in the world, leading his country into chaos, with peaceful protests drawing a bloody response from the authorities following ten weeks of unceasing demonstrations.

In Venezuela, Western elites would like us to believe that the situation is worse than in France in terms of public order, but that is simply a lie. It is a media creation based on misinformation and censorship. In Europe, the mainstream media has stopped showing images of the protests in France, as if to smother information about it, preferring to portray an image of France that belies the chaos in which it has been immersed for every weekend over the last few months.


In Caracas, the right-wing, pro-American and anti-Communist opposition continues the same campaign based on lies and violence as it has customarily conducted following its electoral defeats at the hands of the Bolivarian revolution. The Western mainstream media beams images and videos of massive pro-government Bolivarian rallies and falsely portrays them as anti-Maduro protests. We are dealing here with acts of journalistic terrorism, and the journalists who push this narrative, instigating clashes, should be prosecuted by a criminal court of the Bolivarian people in Caracas. Instead, the West continues to tell us that Assange is a criminal for doing his job, that Wikileaks is a terrorist organization for publishing true information, and that Russia interfered in the US elections. All of these deceptions are carried out by the same Western journalists, media publications and US government that are currently plying their mendacious trade in Venezuela. What double standards!


In Venezuela, the people are with Maduro, and before him they were with Chavez. The reason is simple and easy to understand, having everything to do with the economic policies adopted by the government of Caracas, which during just over a decade in power, reduced the level of poverty, illiteracy and corruption in the country, lengthening life expectancy and increasing access to education. The leftist model followed by dozens of South American countries during the 2000s favored the poorest layer of society by redistributing the wealth of the top 1%.


The contrast between events in France and Venezuela perfectly encapsulate the state of the world today.
In France, the people are fighting against Macron, austerity policies and globalist superstructure. In Venezuela, the the opposition (synonymous with the rich population) is leveraging external interference from the governments of Colombia, Brazil and the United States to try and overthrow a government that enjoys the full support of the people thanks to its domestic policies. Even as many in France are not conscious of it, they are actually protesting against an unjust, ultra-capitalist system imposed by the globalist elite of which Macron is a major cheerleader. In Venezuela, the ultra-capitalist class, backed by the transnational globalists, seek to overthrow a socialist system that places the interests of the 99% before those of the 1%.


Maduro has an approval rating of around 65%, higher than any European or American leader. In France, Macron’s approval ratings hover around the single digits, with only Ukraine’s Poroshenko scoring lower. Poroshenko, quite naturally, dutifully joined the chorus of those egging on a coup against the Bolivarian government of Maduro, even as he leads a country besieged by out-of-control neo-Nazis.


The protests in France are driven by two decades of impoverishment as a result of European diktats that prescribe austerity and the need to strip the middle class of its wealth to favor the influx of cheap labor.This strategy of reducing labor costs has already been employed in other countries, the aim being to increase profits for multinational companies without the need to relocate production to low-wage countries. The large-scale importation of exploited people from Africa has continued unabated for years, and now the average French citizen not only finds himself in an increasingly multi-ethnic society (with the government giving little incentive for newcomers to integrate) but also sees his lifestyle suffering due to a combination of lower wages and increasing taxes, making it increasingly difficult for him to make ends meet every month.


In Venezuela, the crisis stems entirely from external interference coming from the United States, which has economically strangled Venezuela for over a decade. The methodology is that of sanctions and economic destabilization, the same as has been applied against Cuba over more than 50 years, albeit in that case unsuccessfully. Chavez and Maduro have drawn the ire of the global elites by blocking their international oil corporations from access to Venezuela’s oil reserves, the largest in the world. It must be noted that Venezuela is one of the most important members of OPEC, with Riyadh and Moscow advancing the creation of an oil conglomerate known as OPEC +, with Russia, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela as influential members. The West is of course deploying the “democracy promotion” canard to justify its shenanigans in Venezuela, one of its go-to tactics drawn from its well-used PSYOP toolkit.

The French and Venezuelan situations also serve as a barometer for the general state of international relations in a multipolar context. While the US has little trouble interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs, Russia, China and India employ a completely different approach, maintaining a uniform foreign-policy line on Paris and Caracas. They express total support for their Bolivarian ally, which is an important source of trade for New Delhi, a strategic military-oil partner for Moscow, and a major seller of crude oil for Beijing.


Each of the three Eurasian powers has every interest in actively opposing Washington's attempts to subvert the Maduro government, given that Venezuela performs important regional-stability functions, as well as, above all, offering these Eurasian powers an opportunity to respond asymmetrically to Washington’s destabilization efforts in Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. There has been talk of creating particular synergies between Venezuela and other countries similarly struggling to free themselves from under Washington’s boot. China and Russia’s sending of naval ships and military aircraft to the Americas, violating the Monroe doctrine, represents a riposte to the continued pressure placed on the borders of Russia and China by the US and NATO as part of their containment strategy.

According to this report, this past December-2018, radar screens across nearly the entire American Midwest region began to be flooded with chaff ejected from US military warplanes—that was quickly followed by US military warplane chaff disbursements lighting up radar screens all along the American Eastern Seaboard from Maine to Florida—and whose main purpose of in US war zones around the world is to shield from radar view the movement of 160th Special Air Operations Regiment (SOAR) forces—who are known as the world famous Night Stalkers who maintain a fleet of highly customized MH-6M and AH-6M Little Birdshelicopters.
