This is part of the reason I struggle with the concept. Gravity is the force which keeps the oceans stuck to the earth supposedly. So if gravity loses it's power the deeper we go why doesn't the overwhelming weight of the water fall off the earth ? If the density has more influence it obviously should overpower gravity and leave Australia high and dry .

It's easier to comprehend gravity when you look at the object as a whole. This is why Newton's stuff holds up when observing large bodies. When you start to move down things begin to change. Even at the level of a human in 100 m of water those equations begin to falter.

This Gravity is good stuff it knows when to apply pressure/force whatever to the oceans and when to let a helium filled balloon leave the earth.

The density of the earth is non uniform, being denser at the core, so until you get there, it will actually increase.

Also, you can't just consider that question by only looking at gravity. You have speed of spin, radius of the "sphere", on and on.

See graph above. Gravity increases the deeper you go. No ocean floor is remotely near the earth's core. It is all kept down by gravity.

We could scale it down drench a football and get one of those talented basketball guys to spin it anti clockwise and see if this gravity which acts on everything makes the water stick to the surface of the ball. I think even superman spinning that ball and the water would still fly off the surface.

I'm sorry Jen it's not for me. If I want to raise my arm Gravity doesn't bring it back down to earth. How does it differentiate between how much force to apply to my arm and how much is required to keep that unruly mass of sea in order. It would also need to have artificial intelligence for that.

Jen I get the maths but it doesn't really explain what gravity is. It's still theory.
When the apple became ripe and broke contact with the tree, it fell to the floor and stopped. It fell due to it being more dense than air, it stopped due to it being less dense than the ground it fell upon. Nothing more in my opinion.
