About the Journal
I've decided to write a journal here for several reasons

  1. Accountability - By publicly posting my trades I hope to be more accountable and disciplined in following my strategy.
  2. Transparency - This will serve as part of my "track record". This will also help hold my brokers accountable in case they pull a fast one on me.
  3. Help - To inspire other traders of what is possible and to help me realize what I don't yet know (e.g. issues with brokers and leverage exceeding 1000 lot orders) and support to help me keep a level head.

The Goal
It's actually $1,000,000 in about a year coming from $5,000 but I know it will seem so incredulous to others so I'll bring it down a notch. My backtest tells me it can be done with last year's low volatility. I'm expecting this to be even more reachable with this year's expected high volatility.

Strategy
This is a trend / momentum / breakout strategy that swings from about 1 to 5 days. Using my understanding of price action, fundamental catalysts, with moving averages to read the charts in context. I do not use any other indicators. Frequency is around 3 round trip trades a month. Maximum of 2 entries a day. I may scale in / out of my core position but will try my best to get my entries very close together. For this trend strategy, entries are easy and exits are harder. I will strive to optimize my exits. (I will not disclose the specifics of my strategy).

Money Management
I will start with $5,000 equity and risk 20% equity each trade. If the first trade is down or equity falls back to $5,000 or below, I will top it up and $1,000 will be the minimum trade. Once I reach $100,000, I will withdraw and reset back to $5,000 equity on my way to $1,000,000. I would shoot for around 7R to 14R trades on average. Risking at minimum $1,000 each core position.

A sample of what my money management may look like. Yes, wild swings! Help keep me sane!

Psychology
$ values affects us differently. I know I can risk $100,000 for this business but losing $1,000 in a matter of minutes gets to me. Opening a $100,000 brick and mortar business is as much a gamble, but losing $1,000 that quickly while doing nothing most of the time waiting for the proper setup is something different for the mind. I hope to overcome this hurdle and be constantly reminded with your help.

Brokers
I will be using any one or a combination of these brokers at any given time: Interactive Brokers, IC Markets, Pepperstone, AXI Trader, Oanda.

My Background
I've dabbled trading in the stock market (Philippines and U.S.) since the year 2000. Day traded U.S. equities for a year from 2007 to 2008. I was a programmer by profession. I've been trading FX since 2017 but only committed all my time and effort into it last October 2019. The knowledge and experience I gained the past 6 months exceeded what I've learned during all those early years and I believe has set me up to finally reach my goals.

I personally know a guy who took 5k to 190k. He traded a bit in FX (eur/usd) and in index futures.
So I know it's possible! Looking forward to hearing about your trades, good luck you can do this!

So, first trade in after a long while. Glad I had the patience to wait for my setup and hit it when it mattered. I still risked around $1,000 but sized down due to volatility. I scaled in about 2.5 or 3 lots (I don't remember nor care anymore) at around 1.08. Sold 1/3 around 1.095 and 1.1060 and still riding on the remaining.

The increase in $ feels a bit unnatural to me and I feel like I'm going to have a hard time accepting $2,000R losses so I'm sticking to $1,000R on the next trade. I'll risk 10% risks on equity from hereon.

Started the trade with $2,500 equity and here we are now. This trade was with AXI Trader. Recommended by Stephen Innes so I thought I'd give it a try.

Closed all longs around 1.1020.

I go short net short slowly building my pos until I got to 6.2 lots. SL mostly around 1.10355 and 3 lots around 1.1040-1.1044. Adjusted SL after it went in my favor. Risk now capped around $1,000.

After a short that resulted in breakeven, drawdown of $5,000, I got into another short position but only 4 lots.

$1,000R.

Disliked
On the next ride 2nd day, 1 lot short at 1.1006 no SL, I was confident I can manage this even if it went 200p against me overnight ($2,000), then added SL at 1.1039 9am. When it dipped to 1.1010 again around 12nn, I set limit short 1.1020. As it was going down 230pm, I added 2 more lots. Averaging my shorts around 1.1006. I had tight stops accorded to the last 2 lots. When it reached 1.0980, I set all 4 lots SL to 1.1040.

$1,450 realized and $6,000 currently unrealized on this trade. I should make about $10,000 if it reaches targets of 1.0727 and below.

I wrote 10 lot trades in the title but that was back in the time of low volatility. I needed to reduce those lots to at least half to keep my risks proportional.

Closing the trade with about 7R, $7,000 give or take. Happy with my execution though it could have been a little bit better maybe $1,000 more if I took another early exit or played with my position on another 1/4.

Exit 1/4 at 1.0857
Exit 1/4 at 1.0830
Exit 1/4 at 1.0836
Faded from 1.0867 and up 3/4.
Exit everything on pullback down to 1.0865 and below.
