Once there was an old man that lived on a farm. He had an old dog that had been with him for many many years. He was a good friend to him and helped him in his way.
He would bark when the fox came for the chicken, and he would bring him his slippers in the evening.
That was all that the old man needed, and he was happy with the dog.

One day the doctor told the old man that he had a serious illness and would most probably die before his dog.
The old man wondered whether he should take his dog with him when he died, but loved him too much to do this kind of thing to him.
There was a younger family, who was already bidding for the farm looking to move into it once the old man died.
He spoke to them and they agreed to take the dog. He even managed to show the dog how to bring the slippers for the new head of the family before he passed.

So now the old man was gone, but his dog still continued for the new masters. He brought the slippers, and he barked when the fox came.
Sometimes he might only bring one of the slippers or just look at the father irritated, but mostly he did exactly what had been expected of him from his old owner.
But, alas, this was not enough for the new family. They were young, and they still had many ideas, what the dog should and could do.
"If he can bring me my slippers that he can also bring in the newspaper" the father said.
"If he can bark when the fox comes then surely he can also bark when there is a burglar." said the wife.
"If you can do all those things then surely he can chase around outside with us" said the children.

So the next days, the father kept putting the newspaper in the dog's mouth to show him what to do.
The mother got pills from the veterinarian to make him more alert, so he would hear more in the night.
The children got him a leash and dragged him around outside all day.
Happy that they had now all done their best to get what they thought ideal out of the dog, they went to sleep content.
The next morning when they got up, the father called out for the dog, to bring him the slippers.
But he didn't come.
He lay in his crib, not moving.
The black ink from the newspaper had poisened his gums. The pills from the veterinarian had weakened his heart. The children's leash had choked him.
He was dead. He would never bring anyone slippers again.

The familiy discarded the dog and went to the pound to look for a new one.

------------

Ten pips for anyone who can tell me what the story is about(hint: it's got something to do with FF) and why I wrote it.

Could "overmilking"/exploiting/greed be 1 keyword ?

Seems like a parallel with having a good (and simple?) system and then destroy it by making it way too complicated.

...if you want a deeper meaning:

don't temper with something that is designed to do a simple task effectively - or in terms of FF, don't take a good system and ruin it by expecting it to do more than it was designed for.

if you're going to do an analogy with "it's all in the chart" I'll die laughing. Anyway, poor doggie

1. use the internet to read newspapers. You'll save some trees, the ink is nothing more then a pollution source, and thirdly an online subscribe is much cheaper

2. steroids are good for athletes but not for dogs. Hey, the Olympics are coming

3. Don't try to leash a free soul

I miss the old FF days when several moderators used their person judgment and quality of character to keep threads clean and usefull. Now it seams that garbage gets posted and sometimes lasts for days or longer before someone reports it.

BTW Are those 10 pips cross curency pips or base currency pips?

I think most folks latched on to what I meant pretty swiftly

I'd also like to mention soso and ohenry who also replied, in their case via PM.

Considering so many participants the 10 pips will be divided equally
That, or distributed ownership with scheduled visiting rights.

Also, don't forget: the time spent pondering a worthwhile/interesting thought or idea is reward in itself

We could come to 2 forked conclusions in this story.

  1. the hard headed old dog who refuses to learn. About poisoning from pills, the vet must be an idiot, i'd sue the bugger.
  2. keep things simple, change is bad.

next time, when we need to train a dog, just put it into some school...
and then let the school train us how to use the dog....

And later that morning...:

An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt
road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate
in the fence and looked in, it was nice - grassy,
woody areas, just what a 'huntin' dog and man would
like, but, it had a sign saying 'no trespassing' so
they walked on.
They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white
robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven"
he said. The old man was happy and started in with his
dog following him.

The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed,
I'm sorry but he can't come with you." "What
kind of Heaven won't allow dogs? If He can't come in,
then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful
companion all his life, I can't desert him now.
" "Suit yourself, but I have to warn you,
the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you
into his area, he'll promise you anything, but, the dog can't
go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll
spend Eternity on this road " So the old man and
dog went on.

They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate,
just a hole. Another old man was inside. "Scuse me Sir,
my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in
and sit in the shade for awhile?" "Of course, there's
some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves
comfortable " "You're sure my dog can come in?
The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed
anywhere." "Would you come in if you had to leave
the dog?" " No sir, that's why I didn't go to
Heaven, he said the dog couldn't come in. We'll be spending
Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some
shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won't
come in if my buddy here can't come too,
and that's final. "

The man smiled a big smile and said "Welcome to Heaven."
"You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that
fellow down the road said they weren't?" "That was the
Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life
long companion for a comfortable place to stay.
They soon find out their mistake, but, then it's too late.
The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there.
GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all,
HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he
separate them in death?"
