mine is a heavy edited version of somebody script. i attached it. You have to modify it first to fulfill your need.

I copied the three indicators in C: Program Files MetaTrader 4 Experts indicators and not seen. Copy are fine but can not see when I insert the graphic. I can help you?

drag that blue vertical bar (the one that have "Terminal" or "Tester" Caption, any one is fine) out from that box (ex: drag out from the current position to the chart). The window should detached. Now, drag that detached one to the most bottom of the MT4. There, it should've piled up.

Hi,
I want to use an EA to do backtesting more than anything else. I’m fairly new at this, but think I’ve progressed well with learning about EA’s. I’ve done a few little tests that (eventually) do what I want them to do.

I’ve got to a point where I don’t know how to go forward. What I want to do is look at patterns / price action on daily charts, but when I run the backtest, I want to run it in a different timeframe to give more accurate results. BTW, I don’t want to do tick by tick testing, but maybe 5 or 15 minute timeframe. The reason is that if I’m only testing with daily data, my orders won’t execute as they should. Does that make sense? Eg. Price will pass my entry point and reverse back down by close and the trade will never execute, where in reality it would have / or I would have done the trade.

So if I’m running the EA in 5 minute timeframe, then how do I look at the last few bars in the daily chart? I use the Close[1], High[2] to access the last few daily bars. Alternately, could I run the EA in the daily timeframe, but get the start function to run every 5 minutes rather than every tick or only on daily close?

I’d appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hi,

Please help me to solve this problem. I'm using strategy tester to make BACK TESTING of my EA. I can change some value via the "Expert properties" before I run the testing. After some error were found, I edited the EA, changed some external variables & functions, compiled it , copy this edited EA to "....experts" directory (overwrite the old one) & then I run the Back Test again. But this time, the value of the "Expert properties" (of Strategy Tester) are still the same as before, even I have tried to restart the MT4 several times, it still look at the old value (it's something like always looking to the cache ??) .
Please see the images below. The magic number in BLUE area are the old values. The other one (yellow) are the right one (new values, after edited).
As I try to change the value through the chart : Right click (on chart) => Expert Advisors => Properties (F7) , I can see the right one (Yellow magic number).
Why the external variable of EA won't change at : Strategy Tester => Expert Properties ?? (Blue magic number)

I very often compile my code and find that MT4 still runs the old code. i've got into the habit of always compiling twice in a row and that works for me.

Other than that, maybe search the code (ctrl+f) to find a specific ext variable name to see where it is changed.

I don't know this will help or not ... .... Since this month, i'm always running the testing with VISUAL MODE , and then attach the TEMPLATE to the visual tab to check if my EA run as I expected or not ....

Thanks for your reply. What do you mean with "compiling twice in a row" ?

I have tried like this also (not always work) :
a) close my MT4 client.
b) REMOVE the EA totally from the .../experts directory.
c) Start the MT4 again (without the same EA in the "experts" dir)
d) close the MT4 client AGAIN
e) Put the new edited EA to the ..../experts directory
f) Start the MT4 again. This time the value of external variable at Testing Strategy will change (but not always ..... .... )

I think something like "cache" is removed from MT4 client, after I do point b), c) & d).
Is there another technique, so I don't need to do several things above (may be just put the new EA to the ".../experts" directory, overwriting the old one) .. every time after I update my EA ???

Compile twice in a row: in my editor, I literally press 'compile' and when it's done I repeat the process. I cannot understand why when I do it once, the MT4 still runs with previously compiled code, but it does. I don't know what to suggest beyond that. I've not been doing this very long.

Just so we're on the same page, if you're in MT4, right click on your expert, choose modify, and in the editor that opens, use the compile button, twice.

I also run in visual mode and see the action on the chart as it goes along. I didn't understand 'and then attach the TEMPLATE to the visual tab' - did you mean watching it on the chart?

Let me put it this way, if you're in the middle of code that you're writing to run on a 5 min chart, is there some way of accessing Close[2] for the daily chart? ie the closing price for yesterday (or any other day)? I know there must be a way, but I can't find it.

it's simple. If you seek about expert properties in the help, it says

"Inputs — the list of all inputs is given here as a table. Inputs are variables that influence the expert work and can be changed directly from the client terminal. The amount thereof can vary from expert to expert. The current data to be used at testing an expert will be written in the "Value" field. Data to be written in the fields of "Start", "Step" and "Stop" do not influence the expert testing, and are only used for its optimization. Initial value of the variable, step of change, and final value are written in this field. At optimization, expert with parameters within the range between initial and final values will be passed consecutively. Checking from the right of the variable names allows to include the parameter into optimization process. If a variable has not been checked, it will not participate in optimization. Its value will not be changed in the optimization process, and the parameter written in the "Value" field will be used."

To summarize, judging from your screenshot, the expert properties won't affect the back test as you weren't checked the check list the input you want to change. When this happen, the code that you had edited and compiled were already back tested (it ignores the expert properties value, again, that is because you weren't checked the check list).

And, if in somecase you checked the check list and wanted to make it to the default value of the original code, simply just press the reset button.

Hi, the reason why the EA won't execute the trade could be in your EA's logic or the setting of the strategy tester.

Check the Model parameters in strategy tester. If your code is analyzing every single tick movement to execute, then make sure the model parameter selected is : Every Tick (the most precise method based on all available least timeframes to generate each tick)

But if you only check the data by Close[] or Open[], then it shouldn't be the problem and the error was in your program's logic.

And if you want to access Close[] or High[] on different timeframe or symbol, simply just use iClose[] or iHigh[]. There's another too like iOpen[]. Check : MQL4.com: Time Series Access
