Related to our dividend versus share buyback discussion.... https://latest.13d.com/cannibalizing...s-c9e06b2fab43

There was a piece on this subject in Shares Magazine (?) just recently. The activist investor fraternity take a dim view of share buy-back, they see it as direct manipulation of the EPS figures which are (probably) linked to management performance bonuses.

Cool. thx for the reads -- I guess sometimes you want to make sure you're not just shouting into the wilderness -- I do this mainly to keep track of my own ideas since i trade them, but hopefully people reading get something useful out of it.

Anycase, here are three stocks I'm involved in. SMG is an old one, but the other two are new ones.

$SMG (Been in for a while, trying to get some legs above $103 but running into lots of resistance)

Isn't it nice when some these charts (SMG) conform to all the line-drawing that anyone might apply....

Ha... well you know i like my line drawing. Here's another interesting one -- saw someone mention this on my twitter feed along with some unusual call buying...Cap One (COF) behaving like many other bank stocks. I'm long C, but would look to buy this one as well...

Market (SPX) looks very extended right now, so these 4 charts might not work out as I think we're long overdue for a pullback.

If you were long in 2017, you had a good year because pretty much everything has worked out with the exception of my horribly timed utilities trade from a few weeks ago -- that has been a dog with fleas. On the bright side, if you stuck to your stops, you would have been stopped out with minimal pain on that one.

Here are 4 charts that caught my eye this weekend. Happy new Year all!

VAR was breaking out after hours today so I just wanted to see how these 5 names did from Nov 12. Turns out pretty well with the exception of AEP which has gotten slammed w/ all the Utility carnage of late...

AEP - $74.75 - now $68.48 @ stop level (-8.4%)
VAR - $107.55 - now $126 - Big move today after hours (+17.2%)
FLT - $180.55 - Now $208 (+15.2%)
LEN - $58.71 - now $71 (+21%)
CBG - $41.53 - now $45 (+9.7%)

For comparison:
SPY - $258 - now $283 (+9.6%) - Everyone looks like a genius when the S&P is up every day...

A post-eagles super bowl win post. Had a few too many drinks so obviously need to post a couple charts... Here's a couple. Enjoy folks. And BTW, do your own homework, these might lose a lot of money -- especially if the stock market starts dropping like a stone.

Use a stop loss at all times...

I have quite a few ideas this week but I don't want to bombard this thread with them all.

Here is one I finally got into, end of last year, paid $175.
I am building a bigger position.
No tech charts, I just believe their business is worth the investment.

Further to the above, Alibaba now looking here: https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-ch...-idUKKCN1GR1UU

They have a continual drip-feed of positive announcements and business initiatives.

I found some of the gold charts to be of interest. Look to be building a base after very long multii-year downtrends. Given all the geopolitical uncertainty it's a trade I like for the longer term.

First chart is the metal itself (the US ETF), the second are two of the larger producers. Just one interpretation... I've also been reading a lot about insider buying on some of these names. Valuations look reasonable.

My pick is ABBV. Its been getting hammered and I think its going to make up its lost ground.

I've owned ABBV in the past but haven't owned in a while. If it is going to start building a base, now would be a good time, as it's within a point of the 200-day MA that many people pay a lot of attention to. What I'd like to know is if there was any news that came out on 3/21 or 3/22 that caused that big gap lower. That would scare me as it blew through the $100 level which usually shows a little bit of support in my experience.

My bet would be your have some time to decide whether to jump in as the general market looks pretty weak and this name in particular has lost a lot of the positive momentum it had.

That said, you do get a 4% dividend while you wait which isn't the worst thing. Best of luck with it

AbbVie was hoping to qualify for accelerated approval of Rova-T, a small cell lung cancer treatment but had disappointing mid-stage results. For the next five years it has exclusive rights to the autoimmune disorder drug, Humira.
I think the move down may be overblown.
Anyway, thank you for your thoughts.
