I am wanting to expand what I trade but don't want to just open an account just with any broker. I would like to see how a platform like these work before I put a few thousand dollars into just any old broker. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Long time no see Mr. Chef

By far, either Charles Schwab or TDameritrade. I've been with TD for 7 years now.

There is a way to accomplish real time demos with Think or swim. The custom scripting language is quite intuitive in think or swim as well. I have zero, zilch, nada programming experience other than some VERY basic HTML and have been able to do things I never thought I could with think or swim's custom scripting.

Similar to MT4 (and I assume MT5) you can export real time data to Excel. The logic in excel is pretty simple to pipe in real time bid/ask data and manipulate that into an area you can track/analyze your trades.

If you don't have Microsoft Office, I'm pretty sure the same could be done with Open Office (Sun microsystems freeware equivalent of Microsoft Office).

This is all assuming you're on a windows machine.
"Holy Grail" exists - accepting where is the first step.

I have been searching for this for quite a while and still haven't found anything. The closest thing I could find is the "Best Brokers" app (which lacks quite a few features and equities, but it looks good).
There are some others such as "Stock Trainer: Virtual Trading" and "The Game of Stocks", but none of them actually look like any real terminals, the closest is the "Stock Trainer" app, yet not quite there yet.

I hope this will help you at least get started with equities, I have personally found that by mixing the use of the apps to keep track of portfolios with free charting tools (google and yahoo finance, finviz) does work and, with a little help from excel, will start to give you an idea on how the stock market "feels" and moves.

Good Luck
