Strategy Tester - multi-timeframe moving averages not working

Hello! Does anyone know if there is a way to make multi-timeframe moving averages work in strategy tester in visual mode? I have seen this issue with some other indicators - as you start backtesting, they are always showing the same value which is incorrect.

This is an excellent question, Tonny...

And fortunately for you, it doesn't actually matter.

You see...there are many versions of the MTF Moving Averages, the version you have may or may not be of any actual historical value when you look at your live chart, but there are a lot of others that do.

The important thing is, is that you can verify a trade taken under the logic of your moving averages by way of REAL DATA, not the kind of shit that is spewed out by the strategy tester, by way of historical probabilities...

Now...let's move past that and the fact that you may be in love with your current indicator and choose to continue to use it. Ya know what, buddy...that's fine. Don't let anybody tell you, that you can or cannot, should or should not use any tool available...EXCEPT THE STRATEGY TESTER AND EQUITY CURVE!!!

Wanna know why?

Because you are a smart fella, and have the ability to either do math or pull up the calculator on the computer you are using.

Go on, you say?

Aight...it's like this.

You are using a 14 EMA on an H1 chart, but really want to know what that'd look like on an M5. So, work with me here...
H1 chart = 12x M5 candles....as in there are 60 minutes in both.
To look at the 14 EMA from an H1 chart on an M5, simply multiply that 14 (EMA)x 12 (M5 candles in an h1 chart) and you get = 168.

So...when you are running your strat tester, simply apply the 168 EMA to it while you are watching in visual mode and you will see if your trades get taken where they are supposed to...get it?

Now, for a lot of indicators, this same math doesn't work. It is a synthesized property and though may not match 100% accurately, will give you a basic understanding of the properties of an MTF indicator on any chart.

hi Magix, thank you for reply. I have been doing math as you described above about a year ago when running some testing. Don't know why I haven't thought of that now Actually, it is even more convenient. Had this issue with other non-moving averages indicators in the past though so wondered if there was a way around it (but not using any of those any longer so all good).

Make sure that you have history data of the selected pair (e.g., EURUSD) for all time frames (M1,..., D1) in your MT4 <Data folder>/history/<YourBrokerServerName> folder. For example, you must have EURUSD1.hst, EURUSD5.hst, ... , EURUSD1440.hst.

P.S. You must also make sure that the start and end time of all HST files are the same, otherwise during BackTest there would be no data for some specific time frame and at certain time...
