no, scalping is buying on the bid and selling on the ask..... in essence, making / being the market and earning the spread, instead of buying and selling at market and paying the spread.

scalping, as used around this joint, is completely rubbish and not scalping. it's just people trying to sound cool by dropping the 's' word to seem legit while doing all manner of whatever trades.

as for 'allowed'.... that's a bit subjective. you first have to be with a broker that lets you buy @ limit and sell @ limit instead of all orders being bullshit @ market orders. after that it becomes a case of how they handle their limit order book, and by extension available liquidity. it also becomes a function of how they handle any fees associated with orders.... and finally, whether or not the broker is a jackass with a shitty service not worth wasting time on.

edit : i should add that, yes, it is generally for small and quick targets with small stops. this does not preclude the potential to catch a runner and let it go far, though. anyone on here that says they are scalpers you should consider automatically putting on ignore as they are surely an idiot speaking shit, since most brokers don't do proper limit orders.

Take no notice of nubcake. Obviously he doesn't know how to scalp.

Yes the true definition of scalping comes from a trading practice that has nothing to do with the way those who call themselves scalpers today trade. It is just a term used (wrongly, but now commonly accepted) to describe taking small and quick profits from the market. Some consider 30 pips a scalp, others consider anything under 10 to be so. Some only look for 2-3 pips on every trade and take dozens of these trades per day.

So in a nut shell and without getting all worked up and grumpy about the true definition of the word scalping, it means to take quick profits from the market and to do so multiple times per day.

As for whether it's allowed or not, it's dependent on your broker. Brokers such as FXCM for example allow scalping freely. Others will close your account after a while when they notice you scalping.

Yes they do. Because it's more money for them.
