Could 10:1 be the new leverage in US Forex?

I have found the list in a broker..., from the previous leverage change of november 29th, 2009, I hope the list will be the same, here are the major currency pairs that will have 1:50 leverage:

If it wasn't for all of that "scaremongering and shouting", we would have almost certainly ended up with their proposed 10:1 cap. So you are 100% wrong it you think all of the comments etc. were for nothing.

I actually meant on here, people were really getting all riled up over it!

I guess we'll never know why they settled for 50:1 unless they tell/told us but I think it's more likely it was despite all the comments mailed in rather than because of them! In fact the majority of the comments only justified their decision to look at these issues in the first place!

There was the same mass objection against 2-43 but that went through just fine.

Don't overestimate the influence of the public when it comes to legislation, especially not when it comes to legislation as insignificant as this, it's not something which affects votes!

Anyway, we could speculate all day about the reasons....bottom line is it's done and dusted, end of!

Well, I think its good that people got riled up over it. This is unacceptable bureaucracy invading our personal affairs.

As for why they decided on 50:1, I think it was a combination of things. For example, the CFTC came under pressure from some congressman. Would that congressman have raised the issue if no traders/brokers raised an outcry? Of course not. This is why we must loudly object to any sort of infringement of our liberties. If traders don't stand up for themselves, who will stand up for them?

Nothing wrong with that, but let's be realistic. We've tried and failed on significantly more human interest and vote-affecting legislation than how much Joe forex-micro-trader can leverage his hundred bucks, 99.99% of the voting public really wouldn't give a shit even if they knew about it!

I feel much better about the 2 hand delivered letters I sent to my Senator. We really need to give greencompany.com a huge round of applause; I'm going to send them a personal thank you note later. For a few extra bucks, they were having letters hand delivered to various Senator/Congressmen offices. I think it really helped send the message home.

Regardless of past failures, the response this time was colossal from the trading community, and for that should be applauded. While we may not get to keep 100:1, 50:1 is much better than 10:1.

Is this the end of it though, perhaps they're seeing how things pan out with 50:1, it could just be an interim measure. I suppose it depends on their real motive behind the reduction, there's lots of speculation but we don't really know the reasons.
While everyone is 'patting themselves on the back' for a job well done, the fact of the matter is we'll be here next year in the same situation. For the past 3 years, forex market has had to defend itself against unjust regulation. Well I don't see this ending anytime soon. Every year seems we give back a little more than before.

Regulators regulating an unregulated market, something isn't right with this picture. While forex has been regulated out the a$$ in the past three year, we have of yet benefit from the same standards and protections as other markets.

50:1 leverage may be good for you and me (keeps us in the game), but it does take out a lot of smaller (mini/micro account) traders. Not every broker has the same setup as Oanda in offering Penny trading on 50:1 leverage. All more regulation does is push market participate over to European brokers, where they are offering 200:1 leverage and the same opening procedures are US brokers, or push traders to unregulated markets where the risk of losing money may be increased by 10x fold.

Many brokers/traders/investors will move their business overseas as most shouldn't feel as if their being babysat by their government. I've been in the process of moving my trading business overseas and hope to be complete by beginning of the new year.

I'm not knocking those who are celebrating their "win", I too sent off letters to CFTC/NFA/Congressman in both my personal name and business so I too should be celebrating as well. I guess my point being, unregulated forex has given alot away in the past years to regulations. Last year was 100:1. this year its 50:1. What will next year bring?
They stated in their release that the ruling will be reviewed at least once a year and/or depending on market conditions. So, you are correct, this is on on-going struggle and we need to remain active and vocal.

That being my point. I doubt if the overall market picks up, we'll see regulators pushing leverage back up to 100:1 or even 400:1.

If the overall market is stable, we can expect leverage being the same.
If the overall market is great, we can expect leverage being the same.
If the overall market is terrible, we can expect leverage lowered.

Once it's down, it will always be down. US forex is the only market thats being babysat. So every year, forex traders will be at the mercy of regulators? Something doesn't sound right about that ruling. Ask me, there is something huge brewing in the background. We may not know what it is until after the next presidential election.

I agree, they certainly seem to be setting the scene for something, my bet is it's to drive traders to futures, the gap is narrowing.

Would that be such a bad thing though? Regulated, transparent, insured, accountable.
