  • EU Leaders Fail to Strike Budget Deal Amid Post-Brexit Discord

    From bnnbloomberg.ca

European Union leaders failed to clinch a deal on its next long-term budget as deep divisions over spending bubbled up in the aftermath of Brexit. After a 28-hour extraordinary summit in Brussels, officials conceded it was impossible to nail down a seven-year spending plan and agreed to reconvene at a future date, according to an official familiar with the matter. The final accord will signal whether Europe is prepared to spend more collectively to further its goals, whether it wants to prioritize innovation over handouts to traditional industries and whether it’s prepared to wield its financial muscle to force ... Ignored
Well, if none wanted to contribute more, then it would be very easy to agree, no?

Many members joined to get benefits because it was impossible for those countries to rule within an orthodox economic model. They could blame the EU for 'forcing' orthodox policies Now we are in the very long phase of sorting out whether the weak members are worth the candle. EUR is not a safe haven while USD is more reliable (and that is a mouthful). JPY is irrelevant.

Yes the EU's been a gravy train for recently joined members, now reality's coming home to roust. None of the rich countries want to fill the UK's gap. And all's gone quiet on Scotland's request for another referendum on their independance, as they would be a net receiver of handouts if they were to join the EU. That's if they would be allowed to!
Is trouble with the Euro a crisis in the making?

This article presents the affair based on wrong premise to begin with.

It has little to do with Brexit per se. The departure of UK probably affects the whole affair mostly by the "stingy four" not being "stingy five". Had UK stayed, the negotiations probably would have gone like this anyway. In 2013, Cameron demanded budget freeze in real terms, being formally a budget cut, and got it. That was when the Tories were still austerity pushers. Needless to say, UK press gloated. Today they can just fervently but impotently comment on the sidelines.

EP, which ultimately has to approve the budget in the end, has asked for ~30% increase to 1.30% of GNI. UK's contribution pales in comparison.
