Producer prices of industrial products, January 2020

WIESBADEN – In January 2020 the index of producer prices for industrial products increased by 0.2% compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year. In December 2019 the annual rate of change all over had been -0.2%, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. Compared with the preceding month December 2019 the overall index rose by 0.8% in January 2020 (+0.1% in December 2019).
Prices of non-durable consumer goods increased by 3.6% compared to January 2019 (+0.1% on December 2019). Food prices were up 5.2% on January 2019. Pork prices increased by 35.2%, the price of sugar by 16.6%. By contrast, prices of butter fell by 17.9% compared to January 2019 and prices for processed and preserved potatoes were 8.3 % down on January 2019.
Energy prices as a whole decreased by 1.0% (+1.9% compared to December 2019). On an annual basis, prices of natural gas (distribution) decreased by 8.9% whereas prices of electricity rose by 0.7% and prices of petroleum products increased by 5.0%.
The overall index disregarding energy was 0.7% up on January 2019 and increased by 0.5% compared to December 2019.
Prices of intermediate goods decreased by 1.5% compared to January 2019 (+0.4% compared with December 2019). Prices decreased especially regarding non-metallic secondary raw materials (-40.6%). Prices of basic iron, steel and ferro-alloys fell by 8.3%. By contrast, prices of precious metals increased by 22.5% compared to January 2019. Prices of fresh concrete were up 8.3%.
